Title: Computer Troubles
Post by: gailgrove on October 05, 2011, 05:48:36 PM
Just though I would let everyone know that I am having major laptop problems and I think I'm going to have to replace it. So don't be to surprised if I'm not one here as much as usual until I resolve this since I now have to use my grandmother's 7 year old computer, :8) I will still be checking my emails once a day for sure and hopefully coming online once a day as well. :(

I'm sorry about your computer trouble :(

I also have 7 years old laptop as that has originally loaded with Windows XP Home Edition SP3 with still IE6 on it.  I only have about little over 2 GB of disk space left out of 15 GB HDD.  It still works like charm :P

Thanks, I've got my computer working again, for the time being.

Cool to see that you got it working again, sometimes reinstalling Windows will help too if the problem is in software.

My old laptop was close to 8 years old :o when I replaced it this summer. It still works decently but it lagged badly on flash heavy sites.

Mine is only about 2 1/2 years old, the problem is that the DC jack is somehow damaged and cuts in and out, this means it will switch between battery and DC a lot, it needs a $100 repair and a new battery which is another $100, it's just not worth $200 to fix an older laptop when I could put that money towards a newer better one.

Sorry about your computer. I don't know how old mine is. I bought it unused over the summer. It's slow, but that's because of the filter.

Yeah, especially since you can get a laptop for $300 now and for even less for a netbook.

I would try and resolder the connector but laptops are a pain to take apart without a guide.

I tired to get it apart two nights ago, I took out all the screws I could find but the keyboard would just become loose. I could pry it up just enough to see inside but not do anything. I think I'll get a slightly better computer than a $300 one. :D

I could actually help you get parts cheaper.....I wish i could fix it for you...but it would cost shipping LOL...I have replaced a new plug for an HP and a Dell for like only 10-20 bucks! I can help you find parts..but who do you know that can fix it (other than me whos too far from you)

If it would come apart properly (I could figure it out if I had enough time) I might be able to do it myself but I'm not sure I trust my soldering skills that much ... yet. I was thinking of replacing the computer before this started anyways so I'll likely just do that, eventually. For now it is sort of working.

Hmm what's the make and model number, I took my old laptop apart completely using a guide from the Internet.

Update, I took my laptop totally apart thanks in part to an internet howto and simply figuring out how to get it apart. However I now feel like a total idiot as it turns the DC plug is to blame not the jack, I am going to get a  universal power supply. Cool to see that you found the problem, I would either put a new plug on the old adapter or save it for a future lighting project though. :P

I realized I never posted an update about this. Basically what happened is I got my laptop to work until December when it finally wouldn't work. Then I took it to a computer place and they said all I needed was a new power supply, I bought one and it worked fine... Until today, now the new adapter has died as well, in the exact same way the first one did only in four months, instead of two years... Naturally the warrenty was only three months. Anyways, now I'm debating what I should do... What do you think, should I buy another power supply just to have it die in a few months of should I cut my losses and buy a new laptop? The current one is a three year old Thoshiba A500 running Vista, its not in great shape as it is though it runs alright. Most likely I'm going to get a MacBook, I'm not sure if I should get the Air or the Pro or wait to see what they come out with next, which I've heard will be coming out later this year. Another option is to get a tablet (iPad) and use it for most computing needs. For now I'm using my iPod Touch which is a pain to type on, it took close to 30 minutes to type this!

Hmm. I'd get a new laptop if i were you. Seems like they cheated you out of your money buying a new power supply. >:(

You know, several schools in my area recently got rid of a BUNCH of 3 - 4 years old computers, they're at my local recycling centre, I could grab one for you of you want!

Nah I'm serious!  ;D They have 2,9GHz P4 processors, and I think I could grab one of the 40GB HDD that have been removed from the 'puters. If you can pay shipping I'm just gonna make sure it works perfectly and it's yours!

Well I wasn't exactly thinking of a downgrade... :P I think what I'll do is just get one of  these  (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Laptop-19V-3-42A-AC-Adapter-Power-Supply-Charge-Cord-Toshiba-GATEWAY-ACER-PC-/120903631222?pt=Laptop_Adapters_Chargers&hash=item1c266b0176) for now, its hard to go too wrong for that price. My computer still has plenty of life left in it, it seems to be the power jack and power supply plugs that are the only real issues, well, other than the F6 key my brother broke, I'm too lazy to fix that.

Yeah, that sounds like a plan for now until you upgrade. :P

Yeah it should do for now, I've made quite a few large purchases lately and the idea of making another doesn't go well in my mind (not that I can't afford it, I'd just rather save) I also have a possible lighting purchase coming up, I want to keep that a surprise though. ;)

Could it be the gumball (or was it a teardrop?) that Joe saw in a carriage at that antique store?

It could be a gumball, but not that one! Well, I might buy it too, but it is not that gumbal.

Hmm all I could think of is the gumball, the Powerlite Private Eye, or whatever that salvage yard up north sells. :P

Buy a universal unit, it will be cheaper, and will last as long, but will still work out cheaper.

Cheaper than $7? I've looked streetlight universal units but to get one that would power my laptop would be over $80.
