Title: Filament keeps shorting in 40 watt intermediate base bulb!
Post by: RCM on May 17, 2011, 01:06:18 AM
The 40 watt intermediate base "high intensity" incandescents lamps my desklamp uses keep shorting there filaments and blowing early! What happens is the filament sags, and shorts, making the lamp really bright for a few minutes, then burning out! Are there any solutions for this?!

No way to solve this one except switching brands of the lamps.

Intermediate base appliance lamps generally are sturdy and long-lasting. The original one in my 20 years old microwave is still working! (And so does the entire appliance BTW).

Until recently GE still made those kind of lamps in USA. They are now imported from China, I should test one though.

Actually...even the USA made GE intermediate based lamps were TERRIBLE!......We got our GE Microwave oven in my old previous house around 1998 or so. We have had intermediate base appliance lamps for our under the microwave oven....GE ones....and even back in 1998 we leave them on at night light mode during the night and stuff..they only lasted like 2-4 months or so! The lamps become MIRRORED BLACK! Those GE lamps has always been like that for under the microwave bulbs...but the one inside the microwave (where you cook food) does fine, that is because they only turn on for like 5 minutes MAXIMUM a day......our first Microwave oven (1977-1978) had it's original lamp which was a tubular medium based with this LONG filament....it lasted until around 1994-1996....It was a frosted lamp. Not sure on the brand..but it was really black but it did come back to life when the filament reconnected after I removed it...

Now our current Microwave oven also a GE...but it has 120 volt pin based lamps I think G8.....they do a LOT better than those terrible GE intermediate based lamps and they did have the problem Rudy described! Those halogens does so MUCH better....We have Feit ones in there now...although their life span seem to vary....because one blew out but the other one is still there after about a year or more!

Today GE makes 175 watt USA made MH lamps as far as I know...and they are TERRIBLE! The Philips ones did so much better!
