Our pedestrian signals, are much more simple: Red standing man light for "Don't walk" and Green walking man light for "Walk".
The green light, can be as short as 5 sec, before instantly returning to red.
And when the pedestrian light turns red while people still pass in the pedestrian crossing, they are allowed to continue cross it, while people that comes to it don't allowed to pass.
However, passing the pedestrian crossing in a red light, when there are no cars passing is very common in Israel.
Here (http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-1858) is my picture of a pederstrian signal in Israel.
The red light is the upper light, and the green light is the lower one.

We used used to have simple ones.....the numbered ones are newer ones....in fact not all of our intersections has the ones with count down numbers...we still have a lot of older ones...

Countdown pedestrian signals were developed in the early 1990s. At first the countdown timer was just a add on signal section that mounted next to a normal pedestrian signal.
Today, countdown pedestrian signals are being federally mandated for use in all large intersections. Just a matter of getting the states to get on the bandwagon.

There is a very SMALL intersection that has a countdown timer!!! See at

Some of the countdowns here were added in later to an existing pedestrian signal as a additional section below. I've also seen some that were retrofits of the existing incandescent head too.

This is an example of an early 1990s version of the countdown pedestrian signal

Essentially was an add on to existing displays.
On a similar note, the animated eyes pedestrian signal was a concept that was intended to help the pedestrian remember to look both ways before crossing the street. Eyes would scan back and forth during the walk interval. Studies shown these signals didn't have much significance on pedestrians and the concept signal was dropped.
Heres a concept signal in service.

Wow COOL! I never knew about the animated eyes thing...
Regarding to the link above I posted....it actually wasn't an addition....it was installed like that the first place when they installed the whole traffic light set up here!

Interesting, never heard of the animated eyes too, I guess they were never trailed in Canada though.
Here's (http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=43.867084,-79.284564&spn=0.005523,0.009559&z=17&layer=c&cbll=43.867057,-79.284697&panoid=oQgyAB3Vu41MR0OtahVHuw&cbp=12,128.28,,2,-3.03) a example of a pedestrian signal that had a countdown added on later in the mid 2000s, there's a good number of these around here.
