Atlanta

Take to Task received an e-mail from Gene Surber of Atlanta last week wanting to know why the huge metal standards that used to hold the reversible lane lights on Peachtree Street in Brookwood are still standing - years after the lane itself was removed.
"Ten years ago there were reversible lanes on Peachtree Street from the old I-85 exit (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=wendy's&sll=33.802081,-84.391394&sspn=0.019114,0.027509&ie=UTF8&hq=wendy's&hnear=&ll=33.799497,-84.391879&spn=0,0.00086&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=33.799064,-84.391802&panoid=ZYvrxT39F5UWbUYr3W_VzQ&cbp=12,328.51,,0,5) to about Collier Road (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=wendy's&sll=33.802081,-84.391394&sspn=0.019114,0.027509&ie=UTF8&hq=wendy's&hnear=&ll=33.806438,-84.39391&spn=0,0.001719&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=33.805633,-84.39401&panoid=KaJ4f_yGS5JcjgsUXqsDDA&cbp=12,24.14,,0,0.79)," Surber wrote.  "Standards were installed to hold the lights that indicated [the flow of traffic.]  The lights were removed years ago, but the standards that held them are still very much there."
We drove Peactree from just south of the Spring - Buford Connector to just north of Collier Road and counted seven pairs of standards and one solo, a total of fifteen metal monsters looming over passing motorist and pedestrians.
"That stretch of Peachtree is blighted by utility poles and lots of power and cable lines," Surber wrote, "and the unused standards certainly don't help."
We sent a few photos over to Atlanta's Department of Public Works and asked for their perspective.  We hadn't received a response at deadline, so check back later this week for an update.

Take to Task What’s not working

Atlanta: Fixed!
Good news – and not so good – on old lampposts

Gene Surber’s request to the city of Atlanta: Remove 17 huge metal lampposts along Peachtree Street in Brookwood that are still standing, years after the reversible lane lights the lampposts used to hold – and the reversible lane – were removed.
The city’s response: We’ll meet you halfway.
You might not notice the lampposts because of all the utility poles, signage and other visual distractions.  But look again and you’re sure to see them.
There are seven pairs and one solo post on Peachtree from just south of the Spring-Buford Connector to just north of Collier Road.
“The stretch of Peachtree is blighted by utility poles and lots of power and cable lines,” says Surber, “and the unused standards certainly don’t help.  How about working to get those ugly, unused standards removed?”
We sent his request over to Atlanta’s Department of Public Works.  After a little back-and-forth with the state’s Department of Transportation as to who was responsible for removing the lampposts, the city made its move.
“Public works completed removal of the reversible lane overhead mast arms this past weekend,” wrote spokeswoman Valerie Bell-Smith in an e-mail this week.
The news wasn’t all good, though.  Bell-Smith said the lampposts themselves must remain in place because of items attached to them such as streetlights, traffic cameras and parking signs.
