Title: More municipalities in West Penn Power's territory jump on the LED bandwagon
Post by: chapman84 on May 01, 2017, 07:23:41 PM
Everyone on here knows that Harrison Township, PA had all of their street lighting (except for 3 1000 watt mercury vapor street lights) changed to LED's. Unfortunately, two more municipalities have joined the LED bandwagon. Harmar Township, PA signed an agreement on April 21, 2016 to have all of their lighting changed to LED's and today West Penn Power crews just started replacing a lot of 175 watt mercury vapor and 100 watt high pressure sodium street lights and the rest of them will be replaced as well and New Kensington, PA is having all 1,200 of their street lights replaced with LED's too. The street lights in New Kensington, PA have not been changed out yet, but they will be though.  :(

That sucks. :( Similar situation here, freeways are 100% LED and now most main roads are too. And now I hear that sometime this year they are going to be replacing ALL of the remaining HPS wood pole lights (in residential areas) with 5000k (EWWWW) GE Evolves. They have very high glare levels from the side (enough to be dangerous to drivers actually) and, while they are a bit brighter, they have no light spill and only light a small area directly underneath. I have a feeling crime rates are going to skyrocket when they are all replaced since the old lights light up huge areas including people's yards. Now its just a little bright spot underneath and everything else is pitch black.

Yup the freeways are all LED here too (4000K Leotek GreenCobra lights) and many municipalities are going LED, though it's hard to keep track of which ones are since they don't seem to publicly advertise it. I know at least half of RI's cities and towns have announced plans to use LEDs but not that many have actually started. Providence, Cranston, Central Falls, West Warwick, and some East Bay towns I know for sure have gone LED. Everyone is either using 3000K AEL Autobahns in 20, 40, 70, or 133W (50, 100, 250, 400W HPS, respectively) or 4000K Cree lights in 42W or 133W (50/100W HPS and 250/400W HPS, respectively).

Yeah, most of the municipalities in the GTA have finished changeouts to LED over the past few years with the exception of the city of Toronto which is mostly HPS and PSMH. Even some of the municipalities outside the GTA have gone LED. The MTO has done a few LED installs on highways but the existing HPS highmasts and cobraheads still remain.

Thousands of mercury vapor and high pressure sodium lights in these towns have already been replaced as we speak.
