Title: Uprinting weatherproof labels
Post by: chapman84 on April 14, 2017, 06:20:18 PM
After numerous failed attempts to make waterproofs wattage tags myself, I decided to design them on uprinting.com. You do have to order a minimum of 25 tags though, but it only costs $30. Electromark would charge you $137 or more for the same number of wattage tags. All you have to do is upload your design and order.

There is also Makestickers.com which has waterproof stickers and no minimum. They also are very affordable.

Interesting! I make my own labels but it's a bit of a process.

To make mine, I make them in Microsoft Publisher and print them out. Then I cut them out. Then I spray both sides of the label with clear spraypaint (one side at a time of course...) to make the paper labels waterproof. Then I stick them to the fixture with weatherstrip adhesive, which is very nice aggressive adhesive. Works great and doesn't cost much. But if you don't have the patience for it and would rather spend the extra bucks for real-deal labels, seems like you've got some good outlets to do so.

I've been able to create exact copies of a few NEMA tag designs by the big three manufacturers. Would be cool to get them printed on vinyl!

There is a minimum order of 25... Do they have to be 25 identical labels or could they be 25 of the same size/shape (3" square) but with different wattages and sources? Would be a bit of a waste to order 25 of the exact same NEMA tag but if I can get a variety I'd certainly do it!

I've made several NEMA labels before including some for Mike and Darren. I've used them on my some of my lights that I refurbed or replaced the ballast in.

I usually ordered them as a custom bumper sticker they're usually 3"x11" so three standard NEMA tag sized labels will fit on to one sticker. Since they're designed for bumpers they're naturally weatherproof. The good thing with bumper stickers is that you can usually get only 1 printed.

Here's (http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-14088) an example of a couple of labels I had printed to relabel them as MV fixtures.

Here's a couple of labels Joe had made for me as part of a trade we did when we briefly met up in 2014 during my family vacation to Ontario.  (http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-18276) I designed the labels and he had them printed for me. They look great but I've noticed they scratch pretty easily so you have to be careful not to damage them. I also designed  this NEMA tag for the OV-15 TuDor I had restored.  (http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-18174) The fluorescent label was one Joe designed himself.

The red "32" is an exact replica of the 90s-early 2000s GE NEMA tags, cloned right off the original NEMA tag for that light, a yellow "40". The only thing not period correct is the fact that the M-400A2 was never offered in PSMH lol. But the newer style M-400s were and used solid red NEMA tags just like regular MH until around the mid-2000s when they came out with the half red/white NEMA tags.
