Post by: bucketlight100mv on August 02, 2015, 08:02:15 AM
Hi there.

New member here from SW ontario. Long time lighting enthusiest since I was yound and I love old  :MV:
bulbs and fixtures. I have a few vintage 100w  :MV: NEMA fixtures inxtalled in my backyard that run dusk
to dawn that have dim vintage BT-25 lamps installed.

Here is a pic of my early 70's Westinghouse 100w NEMA bucket light that I have mounted on a 4x4 post.

Look forward to chatting and sharing info and pics with other members on here!

Hi there! Welcome to the Gallery of Lights! We have several members from Ontario, though I think most if not all are in the GTA. I have two cobraheads installed in my backyard, though they do not run on a regular basis. Only when needed. I have neighbors on all sides so I don't want to get them mad at me for lighting up the sides of their houses lol.

I have a 1968 100W MV Westinghouse NEMA head BTW. Feel free to look around on the gallery and post pics there as well. My username on the gallery portion of the site is "streetlight98" but on the forum I just go by my name (Mike).

Welcome to Gallery of Lights. I'm one of the members that Mike mentioned that's from Ontario.

Nice that you have several 100w MV NEMA fixtures in your yard. I have a few cobraheads in my collection but since I live in a urban area, I don't have them installed. I do have a 100w MV and a 35w HPS light in service outside though. I only run those when needed though to avoid annoying the neighbours lol.

Hey there and right on!. Nice to know alot of members are from Canada and the GTA area.  Yeah I hear ya on the neighbor thing lol. I had 175w  :MV: bucket lights before with fresh bulbs and they were to bright. Neighbors never complained but I dont want to be "that guy". I have alot of trees in my backyard so it helps. Using 2 100w NEMA bucket lights with high hour dim lamps works perfect for my size of yard. Will post some pics of my set up.

Hey thanks. Ya I was very happy when another lighting enthusiest kindly gave me a late 60's-early 70's Westinghouse 100w  :MV: NEMA Head because I knew that these were rare and exactly what I was looking for.

Hey there. I'm quite happy that I did some research on the net and another fourm to compile that 100w MV NEMA heads do exist and that high hour MV lamps dont quit, they just get dim...perfect for my application. Plus BT-25 lamp shape is my fave!

I have always wanted a 175-400w MV round style flood that has the ballast on the post and a Westie or GE OV20 style cobrahead that were used in the 60's but like yourself, I live in an urban area and these style fixtures would look outa place and even with dim high hour lamps, they would be to bright. Thus the reason I have not been looking all that much for them.

A thing I'm really after is a ov20 remote ballasted unit do I can use my 250w remote ballast unit and/or an ov25 ballast-in-light to also convert to 250 (if ballast is bad) or I always could make the ov20 100w mv.

Ahh another BT-25 fan! I have a few BT-25s kicking around too.

I still see some of those round MV floods in older gas stations in the GTA. I think those are mostly equipped with 400-1kW MV but I know that the same style of floodlight was also made in 100w MV. I suppose finding a real MV version would be a bit hard but I have seem the incandescent version at antique stores and possibly Kijiji before too. You can easily convert them to MV by wiring up a remote ballast like back in the day.

I've actually never seen a clamshell for sale locally though. It seems pretty much all the vintage streetlights for sale locally are either gumballs, cobraheads or power bracket style fixtures.

Hey there. I had a feeling they made the round remote ballast style floods in 100w MV, would be great to find one. Just like where you live, the London area has many old gas stations that still have these mounted on rusted steel posts and are never in use. Problem is that most owners of these older gas stations are not interested in some lighting hobbiest asking for them lol.

Did they ever make a Power bracket fixture in 100w MV?

I've never seen a 100W MV GE Powr/Bracket but I'm sure GE made them. 175W is by far the most common wattage for NEMAs and bracket fixtures though. If you ever wanted to, you could order a 70 or 100W PSMH bracket fixture and disconnect the neutral wire from the ignitor and use 100W MV lamps just fine!

Yeah, I also never see the few remaining round MV floods in use. Not sure if a 100w Powrbracket was made but you can make your own by doing what Mike said. Either order a 70/100w PSMH bracket fixture or replace the ballast in any bracket fixture.
