Title: Germicidal lamp safety precautions
Post by: LampLover84 on September 25, 2013, 07:43:32 PM
I found a perfectly working ECOQUEST Fresh Air (http://ecoquestair.com/shop/living_air/fresh_air/) machine and it has a G4T5 lamp in it. My question is I can see the blue glow from the front of the machine but It is blocked by a metal mesh filter is that still bad to look at? If it is I may replace the lamp with an F4T5 (The machine complains if I remove the starter or lamp) as I don't like the idea of me or someone else getting hurt from a UV lamp

Here (http://ecoquestair.com/upload/iblock/bae/120FA_341836.pdf) is a link to the manual for the product (Adobe Acrobat PDF File)

Thanks

if the vented front has some sort of glass panel behind it then you're good. the glass will block the UV.

The lamp is directly in back a piece of solid metal (Grounded through the power cord) and over that is a another piece of metal that serves as a metal mesh filter
I can only faintly see the blue glow, and only if the room lights are off

Hmm I think you should be fine but definetly get a second opinion to be safe. I suggest uploading a pic of your fresh air machine in the gallery since more people will see it and can get you an answer since honestly i don't think many people actually read forum posts. :(

As long as the device isn't missing any parts, you should be safe unless it has a warning telling you not to be in the room when it's on or something since they wouldn't manufacture a dangerous product without proper warning labels and such.

OK Thanks Mike I will post pictures sometime tomorrow when I get a chance to take the machine apart (It is meant to be taken apart as there are replaceable parts inside)

If there is nothing else between you and the lamp than just a wire mesh, in principal the harmful UV is reaching you.
But if it is dangerous? That depend on the UV power leaking out. So if it is only just one tiny gap, there would be no problem, as there is just not sufficient power to cause any real harm. (on the quantitative grounds). Even normal general lighting lamps do pass the UV out, but it is the very limited power in the UV (health officials set limits for that and all lamps have to comply, or they have to be properly labeled as to operate with the appropriate UV filter glass only; the complete fixtures have to meet the related limits with specified lamps as well), what makes them safe.

But if the mesh let 30..50% of the UV, it become very dangerous.
