Title: Site Down/Problems Connecting
Post by: joe_347V on January 06, 2013, 11:22:33 PM
Anyone have trouble going on here around the evening. I did for some reason, I got a 500 server not available and a cannot connect error message a few times today.

same here! it's only at night too. I get the same 505 message. I thought it was google chrome though since the site came up in internet explorer. BTW, when was your GOL icon added to the address bar? It didn't show up on IE, i've only seen it since i've started to use Chrome.

Hmm, I first thought it was my internet having problems but then I tried using my phone which also had problems. I think the logo's  been up for over a year now. I remember it showing up shortly after I uploaded mine in the gallery. Strange that it dosen't show up in IE though.

I've noticed this too...don't remember the exact time of evening but last night I got a weird server error...I just figured somebody like Jace or Joe (one of the admins) had the site down for maintenance work or something...I was able to get back on later and it's not a huge issue for me if I can only get on certain times of the day or night...I have a non-internet/lighting life anyway LOL...
And another time in the past few days I coudn't get on but Google Chrome apparently couldn't find the site...again I figured the site was down for maintenance.

Hmm i got the error again today, sometime between 2:30 PM today and the past half hour...

It seems the site went down sometime around 8:00 PM last night. I kept on getting a cannot connect or server not available error until 10:00 AM today.

I wonder if it's because the site is getting full.

Edit: It might also be related to the picture views skyrocketing during the last couple of weeks.

Have you checked with these other administrator about this?

I'm still getting these errors. Is there a way to block non-members from viewing the page and hogging up the server or at least limit the number of non-members?

Well, I had the same problem with the site down and connection problems from like yesterday evening to late morning or so. Anyone know what's going on, is it all those guests like Mike said using up all the bandwidth.

Unless the server only allowed a very small bandwidth to our site, I don't think this would pose a problem. I never see more than a dozen guests at most. But maybe there are more at specific moments.

A 500 Internal Server Error would rather involve hardware or software issues on the server itself. What I got earlier today was a HTTP 500.

The frustrating thing for me is... I do have a IBM eServer X205 server, with hot-swappable hard drives. It only needs a minor RAM upgrade, bigger HDDs, a fresh Ubuntu Server installation, and it would be ready to host GoL! I even have 4 or 5 HP professionnal SFF PCs that could be used to store gallery pictures! But I can't really put a server in service for now... :C

Hmm, anyone here know how much bandwidth was allocated for the site. I'm guessing Jace or Ian would know.

Anyway, didn't know that you had a old server sitting around and some old workstations too. Those are usually pretty expensive :P .  I'm guessing you found them at the same place where you find your old lamps/ballasts/fixtures?

Have you noticed the gallery loading really slow lately? Like just this past week... ??? I haven't gotten shut out recently. Sometimes when i'm on I'll see up to 30 guests on but that's very rare. Other times i'm the only person on the site! Users and guests. That's only happened around 2 or 3 times though.

Cool that you have a server though! So if you were to get it working, does that mean that the two hosts we have now wouldn't be necessary and the GoL could operate for free?

Hmm, I wonder if the server errors are because the site is filling up. I remember in 2007 LG had the same problem too when the server was full. I usually find either the site takes forever to load or I get this error page 500 Internal Server Error:

hmm for me it just says "Oops! Google Chrome didn't/cannot find the wepage you requested. You can try [reloading the webpage] or [click here] for a catched copy of the site." or something to that effect... the only thing is that the forum is having problems too and aren't they on separate servers? by the sever being full, do you mean that there isn't much room left for pictures?

Logging in is almost impossible too.

I've noticed every time i upload pics, certain pics will give me an "invalid request" or "the server cannot understand your request" window. Cropping the pic fixes the issue but the original size is under the site's limit and sometimes the shut-out pics are SMALLER than other pics which make it through. I know i'm guilty of a good portion of the site's total pictures so i'll have to get around to pruning out my older pics...

Really, anyone have any idea why there are so many errors on this site now?

I got this when trying to post in this thread. (http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/index.php?topic=698.15) It worked only after a few tries.

Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I've had that problem when I tried to edit one of my recent posts too, It seems only the quick reply box in the forum works consistently.

Okay as far as I know everyone, sorry I have been really busy busy busy...

I just had an error, I haven't heard from Ian in a long time, I will try to contact him

But let me tell you guys, this site can't really get full as I know that this site actually has UNLIMITED amount of space according to Ian and the information I access which shows a infinity symbol .....

Please send me a PM each of you who has this problem, explain what do you do exactly, what browser, what windows, what step by step do you do? Let me know...I will try to keep myself available and fix this issues!

thanks
-Jace

ahh thanks jace. Interesting that the site has unimited space. From time to time i get shut out from the site. There seems to be a number of different screens i get that seem to take turns keeping me off the site lol. Soemtimes "Google Chrom cannot connect with the server" other time some thing like "coppermine has reached the max user connections available" and one time i got s message saying the site had crashed!

also when i go to upload a pic over a certain size (yet still far under the 3000KB limit) i get either "bad request" or "you sent a request that the server could not understand", i forget which one... So lately i've been cropping all my pics, which is why my pics are a tad blurrier and oddly sized lately.

Ahh yes i use windows 7 with Google Chrome and i have FiOS wireless internet if that means anything. I had used IE for a long time but i kept getting these weird ERROR! windows that would literally keep popping up every three seconds so i got fed up and removed IE off the task bar and downloaded Google Chrome. If Chrome decides to act up it's Firefox time....
