Title: PSMV bulb in HPS sodium fixture?
Post by: bryantm3 on December 25, 2012, 07:15:19 PM
hey everyone, i have a pretty large backyard that is wooded and is very dark and peaceful and quiet at night— unfortunately my next door neighbour who we are pretty close with installed a sodium vapour yardblaster that hangs off the back porch. i wouldn't mind any other light, but i have a particular disdain for the colour of sodium vapour lights, it's quite horrid and turns the night into a industrial prison camp. i was thinking later on of making a deal to offer to buy a different bulb for the light and install it for her if she'd let me do it. i found these moonpulse pulse start mercury vapour bulbs that are designed to be used in PSMH fixtures, and i also understand that PSMH and HPS are interchangable to an extent. would it work and be safe (not explode or anything) to install a PSMV bulb into the HPS fixture as long it was the same wattage?

thanks!

Well, I do know a 70W PSMH lamp will NOT light in a 70W HPS fixture. the starters are very different from what i understand. If you could, just offer to install a MH light for her or ask her to sheild the light so it doesn't bother you. you have to remember, SHE might not liek the poor color rendering of MV. I know i don't like the color of clear MV for use outisde collector's purposes. I like light that properly registers colors (so my choice for HID lighting for use other than a collector's is MH (whether it be standard or PS)
