Do you prefer clear vs. coated :MV: light bulbs?
-
I like cleartop mercs for collection purposes because part is coated and part is clear. i'd prefer coated lamps for lighting an area though.
-
I like coated mercury vapor lamps better.
-
I like the clear :MV: bulbs because I like to see the arc design ;D
-
I personally like clear, for 2 reasons.
First, I like the bare MV emission spectrum.
Second, I love the startup and discharge.

Clear mercs! Nothing beats a blvd bathed by miles of sparking blue/green lights! Plus fixture efficiency and light distribution is better with clear mercs.

@ Dave; i thought /DX lamps were more efficient?
-
Clear is more efficient in the long run, as the lumens don't drop out as fast. That is because as the lamp ages, the UV emissions reduce the most, so then the phosphor (DX coating) effectively becomes a light blocker. However, when the lamps are new, Coated can be more efficient; however the light control is worse compared to the clear equivalent, so it all depends on the application of the lamp as well as its running time/age.

Well, for me clear for roadway lighting, and landscape lighting, coated for sign lighting, high bays, and other outdoor lights.
And for my collection well, all of them! :P

I used to really enjoy traveling in New Jersey! Why....it was fun seeing the greenish color in Cobraheads which held clear mercury lamps. That was under PSE&G!

clear, but with a light refractor.
