On the tail end of the royal snowdump that I had last week, my power went out for around 8 hours. This got me to seriously consider getting a portable backup generator and a Reliance 6 circuit power transfer switch. From what I've seen of the product, the transfer switch looks fairly easy to install and operate. This has become another project lined up for next year along with my front lawn replacement.

I think that's a good idea. I would especially want one if I lived on well water (no power for a pump means no water during a power outage either) or if I had someone in my household with something like sleep apneia or COPD who had oxygen equipment that required electricity.
How many KW are you thinking? Those little 2000w Honda portables are pretty good...All you really need is lights and a fridge...you can even run a washer or gas dryer on one (I know, I live off grid) but it pushes it a bit...
