Title: induction: the new mercury vapour?
Post by: bryantm3 on June 04, 2012, 10:38:36 PM
i've never actually seen one in person, but from what i've seen in videos on youtube and pictures on here, they look very much like coated MV lights, and they do use mercury vapour, but it's activated through magnetic induction rather than by electrodes. does anyone know if the light is constant or if it's pulsating like LEDs? they installed some LEDs in old fourth ward park here in atlanta and you can see them 'refreshing', it's like driving by an old film strip.

no bites, i can see— many angry MV fans. but check this out:

to me they look like MV and beat the crap out of LEDs. that's why i'm excited about them, they represent a move back to the MV colour of lights, even though it's not the same technology, although it is similar in that it uses mercury vapour.

you can see how it looks on the street— like coated MV:

this is basically like a 15 minute advert for induction, but it really shows you what it looks like on the road:

I agree. Induction does beat the crap out of LED, but it's still a little too focuses IMO. Look at how spotty the road looks. Though LED is much worse. I see part of the picture is still on fire though lol.

i can see what you're talking about but it looks like the HPS have the same problem there:

i hate LED streetlights. i saw one the other night in the new O4W skate park and it is abysmal. directly under the light, it's like standing under a laser beam, you can't look up at it or it will blind you. but then you look 10 feet away and it's complete blackness. but the thing that bothers me the most is the nature of the light... it looks bizarre and is pretty unnerving— not just the colour but the 'pulsating' nature of the light, like a TV screen.

I wonder if those HPS lights were FCO or drop lensed fixtures, sometimes the optics used can make a difference on the light distribution. I believe most induction lumes are FCO so it might be why they look spottier than HPS in that shot.

Oh and I noticed that one of the shots posted was from Toronto, maybe I'll check that street out myself. :P

do check that out and tell me if it looks as good as it does in the pictures. we haven't had any induction lighting installed anywhere in the southeast that i know of.

The highway looks like that rope light used for decorative holiday lighting lol. :o

My county has a LOT of parking lot with inductions.....

Here are my pics I have taken...

Oh almost forgot

They don't flicker or pulse but I've seen LEDs as streetlight and they don't flicker either because the driver converts the 60 hz to much higher value!

i've been perusing the gallery so i did see those before— my favourite is the tunnel, what a beautiful colour. since you've seen them in person, do you think they look like coated mercs?

yes pretty much like a full brightness coated merc, but they do not warm up like one....

Some California cities, such as Cupertino up north, and Pomona, Pasadena, and Inglewood down south, have installed induction street lights by Tanko Lighting. They refurbished old cobraheads, installing electronic driver units and elliptical shaped induction lamps. That's as close to MV as you can! I have pics, but the gallery is down as I type this.

Yeah i looked into that Dave. I wonder how much it costs? I'd imagine it's not cheap shipping both ways but it's still probably less than buying a new induction fixture or LED. I appears that the utility sends a large lot of cobraheads to Tanko and they give them a new powdercoat and furnish them with new induction gear.
