SPACE SO FAR:
474.37 / 1000 MB

What is states the gallery space? HDDs for servers usually have a capacity from 500GB to 5TB. 1GB now is used ONLY in small, cheap USB Flash drives and will be obsolete in the near future. 1GB is not enough to store many pictures and therfore external USB HDD which usually have much more then 1GB (250GB minimum) used for this application.
-
It's true....1 gb thumb drives in Target are like 5 bucks in the cashier aisle! LOL
-
Space on a home PC is cheap, but on a server costs a lot more - remember the admin is typically hosting a few sites on the machine, and is doing ( if they are responsible) a daily backup of the site. That takes a very expensive tape drive, and a lot of expensive and temperamental tapes, as well as changing them out and keeping a monthly rotation. Space on these tapes costs way more than on spinning glass, so the space per server is limited.
Costs for hosting rise if the bandwidth goes up due to large images, so keeping them small is better.
As to Flash, I am buying a 512K SD card for $1 retail, and find them useful as give away stuff. If I was to buy in 100 lots, they would be cheaper.

Regarding of the continue of using tape drive to backup: Tape drive should became obsolete after the lowering prices of the high capacity portable HDD drives. There is also a >1TB USB portable (Although still large) HDD that used primary for data backups.
Regarding the Flash: SD flash cards used only in digital cameras and with 512K you get only a limited space for pictures into the camera. But the pictures are moving later to the hard disk so 512K should be ok for these that are photographs less pictures. The minimum capacity of the USB flash drives (Disk on keys) is 1GB.

@dor123: Tapes would stay for one good reason: It is the only high capacity medium, that you will be able to read after 20 years. Standards for others are changing so quickly, then in few years you would not be able to read data stored today - there would be no drive compatible with "such obsolete technology"...
This is the reason, why tapes are so popular in professional environment - newer HW is made on purpose so it could read media recorded more then 20years ago and such concept is expected to be maintained on them (as this is the only reason, what keep them on the market today)...
