Title: Lighting upgrade at my church
Post by: NiMo on December 18, 2011, 02:31:30 PM
My church's gym is currently being lit with twelve old (and I mean OLD ) high wattage incandescent fixtures.  I have proposed a total upgrade with 4 lamp T5 industrial grade highbay fixtures with guards.  Now, here's the dillema.  One of my church elders opposes this idea and thinks that similar performance can be obtained using the existing fixtures. Now, I don't know about you, but CFLs don't exactly give the same amount of light as a 4 lamp highbay.

Is the existing fixture have Single-contact (Mogul) Giant Edison Screw (E39) or [Medium] (one-inch) Edison Screw (E26)?  They can use the one of the giant self ballast CFL ???

You have plenty more knowledge of lighting than him. I'd consider printing out the options. Here's soem examples:
 An incandescent lamp:  (http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/2431/IN-0500P35CL.html)
- 500 watts
- 1,000 life hours
- 10,850 lumens

 A CFL lamp retrofit:  (http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/8373/FC150-35861.html)
- 150 watts
- 10,000 life hours
- 9,200

 Or, a 4 lamp F54T5 fixture  (http://www.1000bulbs.com/product/59067/TCP-EL4SA454U10.html)
- [4X] 54 watts (216 watts)
- 25,000 life hours (lamp life)
- [4X] 4,650 lumens (18600 lumens total)

Replacing a 10,850 total lumen fixture with a 18,600 total lumen fixture may be a bit of an overkill unless the incandescents are too dim. Perhaps a three lamp F54T5 fixture would work better with a closer matching 13950 lumens? It'll save 54 watts per fixture and still provide additional lumens.

I'm not sure T-5 highbays are available as three lamp fixtures.  I've only seen them as four or six lamp.

FWIW the ones (http://www.lithonia.com/commercial/MS5HB.html) used at my local orange box are triple lampers.
