Take to Task: What’s not working

New Item: Buford Highway

Lights out on interstate

A lack of lighting is causing Elizabeth Ellis to worry about safety issues.
“I emailed you a year or two ago to let you know that when I drive home at night on the interstate, a significant number of overhead floodlights are out.
“I live in Virginia-Highland and take the Buford Highway access road exit, coming to a stop at Armour Drive.  At that time, I counted 22 lights out.  I now am able to count 37 lights that are out,” she said.
Recently, Ellis said she cam around a curve in the elevated exit ramp and saw a motorcyclist standing beside his vehicle and huddled against the wall in complete darkness.
“I hope he managed to get home without being hit by a car,” she added.
We send her concerns to DOT and to Atlanta officials.

Update: Buford Highway

Interstate light repairs await funding

Last week, we told you about a lack of lights on the interstates in Atlanta.
“I emailed you a year or two ago to let you know that when I drive home at night on the interstate, a significant number of overhead floodlights are out.  I live in Virginia Highland and take the Buford Highway access road exit, coming to a stop at Armour Drive.  At that time, I counted 22 lights out.  I now able to count 37 lights that are out,” wrote Elizabeth Ellis.
Early last week we received this statement from public works spokesperson Valerie Bell-Smith:
“The interstate lights within the city of Atlanta are the responsibility of the Department of Public Works.  We have had limited funding in the past for repairs which has created a delay.  We expected to allocated funding to begin repairs along I-75 and I-85 south to the airport, and Langford Parkway in early 2012.

I think the Langford Parkway as the spokesperson mentioned is related to AJC - Take to Task: Lights on in East Point
