Title: Boxful of light bulbs. What was inside?
Post by: merc on May 02, 2015, 04:31:14 AM
In times when people used incandescents everywhere (well, a part of homes had preheated fluorescents in their kitchens) and they had a few tens of them at home, every household used to have a box with spare lamps.
Do you remember what it contained?

Early 1980's.

At home:
Most of lamps were made by our local Tesla brand. East Germany Narva and Dutch Philips also appeared among them.
Their rated voltage was usually 225V, 230V or 240V while our power system was 220V at that time.
IIRC, we didn't have any 15W lamps at home. The lamps in the box were 25W, 40W, 60W, 75W, 100W and 150W or 200W for use in a large globe fixture in our living room. My dad was an amateur photographer and at that time he had two frosted 225V / 500W / E27 lamps. I loved their incandescence for about 2 seconds when turned off!
We used to have both E27 or E14 sockets at home and lamps both clear and frosted.
As for special lamps, I can remember a special light bulb (traditional shape) with an opaque top (about half of the spherical part) and the rest frosted. Don't know what was its purpose. We also had a few daylight (coloured) 60W Philips lamps - these were my favourite ones.

At grandparent's:
I can remember also other brands there - Hungarian Tungsram, Polish Polam(p) and Romanian Romlux (the last two were infamous for their short life).
My favourite ones were Krypton filled mushroom shaped 60W or 75W Tungsram lamps. Their box also contained a 5,000 hrs. long life Tesla lamp and a blackened 100W lamp by the same brand with somehow shortened filament that was unusually bright.

Do you also have memories of light bulbs you played with?
