Title: Incandescent bulb ban in 2012 - what do you plan to do?
Post by: Silverliner14B on January 07, 2010, 02:33:00 AM
What are you planning to do?

-Stockpile incandescent bulbs

-Use CFLs, LEDs and energy saving halogens

-Use your own way in lighting (using street lights, preheat fluorescent fixtures, etc)

-Other

I would use energy saving Halogens...and LEDs if they go cheaper....also I would try to find NOS CFL and anything I can find that is..."safe"

It is not easy.......but...let's have faith something good turns up....

Since i moved into my present home, except lava-lamp (there it is well covered), i don't use incandescents - this technology have bad "safety record" with me (mainly explosions at EOL with hot and sharp fragments ejection)

T8 linear tube fluoros for all >1200lm fixtures, except bathroom
F13T8/840 for my wife's "office" desk, 50W reflector MV for my desk,
22W Circline for bedroom
Bathroom (frequent switching) and all <400lm i use LED's
"whole evening" living room HID (70W Powerball with two-way dimming feature)

I chose A, partly B and C:

I stockpile incandescent. Harper won't tell me what lighting source to use, hell no.  >:(

Energy-saving halogens look like a good alternative to incandescents in some applications, but not everywhere, unfortunately.

I'll use linear fluorescents as long as they're magnetic-ballasted. As of mercury, I'd use them as much as I can.

I'm choose to do some of each:

I'm stockpiling some incandescents for some lights that look better with incandescent and/or if I want to dim them.

I also use CFLs for some fixtures mostly in fixtures that aren't dimmed and not decorative.

For areas that need a lot of light I'm using 2 and 4 foot fluorescents with some magnetically ballasted and some electronically ballasted.

I also think that energy saver halogens are a good alternative to incandescents but  there still too expensive here to replace incandescent.

I also use some MV and HPS but mostly as a worklight and outdoors.

1)Finding preheat fluro ballasts
2)finding motorola electronic ballasts
3)using more electricity on lighting
3.5)using more MV! and CMH
3.6)using preheat CFL's wherever i use a incandescent fixture if they fit
4)using CFL's of all types and brands (except certain models& brands that ARE fire hazards)
5)using halogen in motion sensor applications or programmed rapid start FL
6)using LED only top quality that dosent dim out quick
7)maybe get some watt-miser incandescnt for tests. or a pack for use and some feit "decade"ones
8)buy a lot of MV lamps
9)
10)

Funny enough I went energy saving 20 plus years ago, as I wanted the higher output lighting as general lighting, and have stayed that way ever since. I do have a lifetime supply of incandescent ( if you are wanting some ask the Gull if I give away) and am building up the supply of older flourescent lights as time and availability allows.

I use CFLs, but mainly GE Helical 13w ones.  They are good quality, even tough they are made in China.  I still use a few incans where needed, such as fixutres that are to small for a spiral. I have one K-LITE A-shape CFL in use in my kitchen, but that's it. I am, howver, one of the crazy people that uses a 175w clear MV for general lighting. I do collect incans though and will make a stockpile if I can!

I plan on stockign up, but I'll also use the odd wattage incanadescents as an alternative. At least they're still incandescents....

for me i got enough to last 20 years all i used them to heat up the room on semicold nights in texas winter as it dont get cold that often. a 4 pack a 100 watt bulb will last me though the winter season so i got about 7 cases of 100 watt bulbs. i frown on the ban becase the bulb take up some
storage space. good thing about texas we can still have bulbs we cant tolerate with out them too many good application for them here.

CFL/LED for the other rooms in the house, LPS for my room  ;D (I know my mom hates it, but it is my room!), PL fluoro or merc, as I have a yardblaster for the backyard.(In Canada, I can still use MV lighting.) :)

I have though more about this, and will use CFLs until LEDs come down in price/imprOve in reliability, and just use reduced wattage incandescents for now in lights that I don't want to use CFLs in, then later halogen, until LED takes those over in size/reliability/price, too.
There will always be room for MV lights though, I want a SBMV light bulb!!!!!

I got around the 100 watt bulb phase-out in California by using 50-100-150 watt "3-way" bulbs which are exempt from the requirements . In a standard socket, a 3-way bulb will operate at the "medium" setting so in my case, the 100 watt filament would be used. We do have lamps with 3-way sockets though so those were the benefactors.

Other than that, the lights we use most of the time are either linear fluorescent or have CFL bulbs in them. I also have LED bulbs in the dining room ceiling fan and some Philips Halogena' Energy Saver bulbs here and there.
