Title: F40T17/IS application information wanted
Post by: RichD on September 11, 2011, 10:29:21 PM
I picked up a couple of case of these oddballs for cheap awhile ago, but I can't find any application information. Since they're apparently still in production (at a crazy price!), they must have plenty of uses, but where/why? Who wants a 40watt T17 bipin lamp when one can have a 39watt T12 slimline lamp on the same ballast? ???

At first I thought they might have been designed as a lamp/ballast retrofit for the fabled F90T17, but that does not seem right. Any ideas?

The only info that I could find on them was in this (http://www.lamptech.co.uk/Documents/Catalogues/Cat%20GE%20USA%201960.pdf) old GE lamp catalogue on page 66, which suggested using the F40T17 lamps as a way to minimize glare because of their lower surface brightness.

Quote
INSTANT START LAMPS

The 40-watt Instant Start lamps operate on 48 inch T-12 Slimline ballasts.

The T-17 lamp has a comparatively low surface brightness. It is used for high quality lighting installations in schools and office and for special industry applications where it is important to minimize direct and reflected glare.

Hope that helps a bit.

It does help, Joe. It makes sense too. Thank you.  :)
