I want to get a fixture at a pawnshop in Brampton. Is there a potential of having traffic equipment or roadway lighting in a pawnshop? Im willing to go to a pawnshop that could have them. ??? :)
-
Yeah traffic signals could be at a pawnshop but be aware that they're a little more money than you might think. You can probably get a signal in good shape for 100 bucks. Street lights i don't think they'd have at a pawnshop. I think for btoth though, ebay is the best bet.
Here are some lights that you might like:
this one is a black OVZ restored and beign sold by George who's a member here. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cooper-Lighting-OVZ-high-pressure-sodium-street-security-yard-parking-lot-light-/161067904559?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2580652e2f)
a 400W MH OVX. You can run MV lamps on this too, which is cool. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cooper-Lighting-Drop-Lens-Roadway-Street-Parking-Lot-Light-Lamp-OVX-400w-120v-/380679885454?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58a24a128e)
and a T&B 313 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/American-Electric-100w-HPS-Roadway-Light-Outdoor-Security-Street-Luminaire-GE-/281132994424?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4174d50f78)

Thanks Mike. Well now I have an idea on prices and where to get them. :P

Try Busters (http://bustersbrampton.ca/) at Queen/410. (Yes their site looks like they won't have anything but they seem to have a bunch of HID stuff the last time I was there) They had a GE HMAA highmast fixture there and some highbay parts there for sale. The highmast (347v? 750w HPS) was selling for $75 but it might be gone since the display disappeared. They did mention they had six so it won't hurt to ask. Make sure the fixture is for 120v though or you'd have to replace the ballast.
The highbay parts were around $25-50 and most were tri-tap (120/277/347v) 400w MH.
Other places you might find a signal or a streetlight for sale include: antique shops (I had the best luck in Waterloo area and Hamilton area), St Lawrence Market (Toronto, Sunday Market only), Kijiji/Craigslist (search traffic light/stoplight/stop light/street light/streetlight/streetlamp in buy & sell) and eBay. Restore does occasionally have HID lights for sale but I haven't seen a streetlight there yet.
Expect to pay $50 and up for a streetlight and $75 and up for a traffic light. If you want the traffic light to run like it did on the street you;ll also need to buy a sequencer for it. There's pretty nice model for sale on eBay usually for $35+$10 shipping.
-
I was thinking of Busters. It could be a possibility I only saw tons of guitars there before and music equipment last time I was ever there. Il be sure to check though. Sequencers only cost $35-45. Thats pretty cheap :o
-
it's not a professional sequencer, it's a little 3"X5" circuit board that controls the light (and can only be used indoors as the humidity and hard temperatures can damage it even if it's inside the signal housing.
-
oh. well its still something to start with! 8)
-
Yeah the sequencers are not recommended for outdoor use but I guess putting it in a enclosure and potting it should make it more weather resistant.
-
I think il do what you recommend to start my collection :)
-
Cool! Try looking at Restore too, The one at Carlaw/Lakeshore (Toronto) currently has some HID ballasts and the one in Barrie is worth visiting if you have time (It's HUGE and has a ton of lighting/electrical stuff)
Also if you want a nice 70w MH wallpack with lamp and glass refractor, there's might be a RAB one at the Restore (Gardiner and Royalyork) for $20.
-
Il come check these places out in August possibly. :) It sounds like they have a lot.
-
is it at all possible to specifically request a fixture before its taken out of service? Like the R47 and B2255 gailgrove requested?
-
I think he had a contact and got the lights becuase they were already coming down.
-
Yeah he did...he already had a B2255 and a R47 so he offered them to me (since they would have been scrapped if I didn't save them).
IIRC, either OVXs or AEL 115s replaced both lights.
-
I want a cobrahead badly :( lol

Here's a light on ebay. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hubbell-Bronze-Color-75-Watt-HPS-Dusk-To-Dawn-Security-Barn-Street-Light/221256668258?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D271957826194824840%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D161074324746%26)
i mean, it's a little pricey but if you want a street light that badly it's not a bad price, especially since it's brand new. You're really not going to find a street light dirt cheap if you don't have contacts. The only way you can ensure that you get a light is to save up and buy one. My M-250R1 was 80 bucks with shipping and my M-400 was about $150 with shipping. they're not cheap that's for sure. Fortunatly those were the only two street lights I've had to pay for besides the NEMA head from Jace, which was just like 20 bucks for shipping.
I'm thinking about asking a contact i have with the electric company for a few removed light fixtures. The most common reason the lights get removed here is for bad igniters. If i can get two lights, i will restore them and send you one for the cost of shipping (probably 30-50 bucks) if i can sell the other one. I would need to sell the second light first to cover the cost of the restorations for you. So if i were to sell the other light, whoever bought it would technically be paying for your light too but they wouldn't know it... And that's if i can get a pair of lights. I haven't asked yet and I'm not too sure if i'm going to go through with it. It will be a HPS light for sure, probably a GE M-250R2 in either 50, 100, or 250W HPS. If you're interested and i get the lights, we can discuss details then. :) I hope you can get a light. The first street light is always the most special. My OV-25 has a special meaning to me becuase if it wasnt for me getting it for christmas, i wouldn't have ever found out about other collectors. I had googled "Westinghouse TYPE OV-25" becuase it was embossed on the refractor door and found David F's site and from there found the LG and GoL when it was founded.
-
Not a bad price for being a new light. :) That would be great getting my first light. I'd be willing for that price just need to make sure that everything works out good for you. I like the
GE M-250R2 we had one that was replaced a few months ago. unfortunately it was the only one left around here. I found GoL and LG by trying to find out who made the OVX. :D
-
There's also someone selling FCO M-250R2 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/GE-ROADWAY-LIGHT-COBERA-HEAD-USED-CONDITION-COBRA-NO-BALLAST-/360437025337?pt=US_Chandeliers_and_Ceiling_Fixtures&hash=item53ebb88a39) housings on eBay. Not sure how much to ship to Canada though. If you end up getting one, swing by the Restore near Lakeshore/Carlaw and pick up a ballast for it there. Active Surplus in Kitchener might still have the B2255 for sale too.
I heard this (http://www.nabusu.com/home.aspx) place might sell old streetlights too. Anyway I hope you can get a light too.
-
That place isn't too far either so I guess there is still some hope of finding one in a shop :)
-
yeah the light i linked is brand new. Joe's link is a good one too. i was looking for it but couldn't find it. yeah if shipping isn't astronomical it wouldn't be bad. shipping is 25 bucks for me so it's probably double that for you. if i'm able to get a couple lights from the electric company and you end up getting one, it won't be new but it will work and i may give it a new coat of paint. anyways, it's only in the idea stage and i haven't asked yet.
-
I'll keep an eye on Kiijii for you too, sometimes used lights show up on there.
-
Thanks guys :D :)
-
Hey Hanging Light, PM me, I'm swimming in lights right now. I've got a few duplicates I'd be willing to give away and I'm in Brampton.
-
Sweet! I went to the pawnkings place today and the bullseye isn't there now and theres a eagle there
-
Hmm, was it a flatback or a Durasig?
-
Durasig but they weren't selling it though >:( :( It was depressing to hear
-
Ahh, at least it was just a Durasig :P A common signal for me unless it was incandescent.
-
it was :P :incandescent:
-
Ahh, I guess it was a older one then. The incandescent Durasigs usually came with Eagle poly lenses.
