Title: I'm Back!
Post by: gailgrove on February 27, 2013, 03:06:44 PM
Well I know I've been absent for the last half year or so but I'm finally back! I've certainly been busy though, I did a co-op placement at a company called Igman Electric (http://igmanelectric.com/) that finished late last month. Overall it was a good experience, the only thing that sucked is I didn't get paid. One of the things that I did is I rode around in the bucket trucks and saw many types of lights being fixed, I also got to relamp a cobrahead, that was pretty cool! Anyways we were under contract to Oakville Hydro to repair their streetlights and I got to see firsthand what it was like, and in case you were wondering I didn't get a single cobrahead from them, that's because they replaced ballasts! I didn't really get any pictures though simply because we were always rushing around and I only had my phone with me, which doesn't take very good pictures. Beyond just doing lighting I also got to see and do lots of other cool things (and not so cool too, like digging holes...) Overall a good experience, though I'm also glad it's done.

I also got a R37 in September from a family friend, which I'll need to get around to taking pictures of once I reorganize the basement...

In addition to all of this I recently learned I will be able to get some of these (http://goo.gl/maps/wczN3) lights shortly as the building is gone and some of the lights have come down. I was also told there was going to be some sort of "publicity event" about this, I really have no idea what that means, nor am I sure I want to, but I guess I will find out soon...

Anyhow that's about all that's happened while I was gone, I'm likely going to go on a commenting binge now, lol.

Welcome back! And that sounds like a fun experience you had! About replacing ballasts, good for environment and saves money, although takes a little more time to do but again I think it's worth it!!!

Thanks Jace, what I find funny is changing the ballasts barely took any longer than changing the one cobrahead we did, it was missing the door. I also got an exit sign out of it as well as a few other small things.

Did you get to go up in the Bucket? I love working out of the Bucket.

I did once, I also got to go up in one of those "Genie" lifts for a few hours, that was with someone though. I thought it was fun!

Welcome back! I'm glad to hear that they still replace ballasts. Did you come across any Powr/Doors too?

Nice! It's good to hear that they replace ballasts! It makes sense to be because not only are you saving materials and lowering waste, your savign money too at the same time! And if it takes longer to change the ballast, you'd make more money over replacing the fixture if you're paid by the hour.

Thanks guys! We came across a few B2255s but they didn't need anything more than a lamp/PC. We did come across plenty of decorative lights (including TwistPaks) that had power trays, those we just put a new ballast on the tray. We also replaced two whole TwistPaks that the lenses had fallen off of. We put up brand new TwistPaks that I got to unbox and assemble, interestingly the boxes still said Powerlite on them, in addition to AEL. As for the amount of time to fix lights, it could take anywhere from 1 minute to all day, depending on the problem.
