Title: The reason why Duquesne Light stopped maintaining their mercury vapor lights
Post by: chapman84 on June 10, 2017, 03:40:07 PM
I don't know this for a fact, but I think the reason why Duquesne Light stopped servicing their mercury vapor street lights in 2009 is because the mercury vapor lamps they were using were junk. The newer Phillips and GE lamps aren't as good as they used to be. They lose a lot of light output after only 3 or 4 years and a lot of them burn out prematurely. I had a Phillips mercury vapor lamp go bad after only 6 months. I have since switched to Sylvania mercury vapor lamps. They give off more light than their competitors and they last longer. It's too bad Duquesne Light didn't take this into consideration instead of wasting thousands of good fixtures that didn't even need to be replaced. Duquesne Light stopped installing mercury vapor lights after 2005 and now they refuse to fix any mercury vapor light that needs serviced. Any mercury vapor lights that go out or dayburn will be replaced with high pressure sodium lights. Mercury vapor lights are also replaced with high pressure sodium lights during pole renewals, even if the lamps are still good. Sad times we're living in.  :(
