Take to Task: What’s not working

New item: East Point and the interstate highways

Driver: Lights need to be on

Michael McCarthy is furious over dark streets and highways.
“For months, lights have been out in our area and no one has done anything about it.  As you know, lights are VERY important for the safety of travelers at night.  Not only do they significantly improve the visibility to prevent accidents, but have been proven to make a huge difference on both crime and the public’s sense of security.  Cities wouldn’t bother putting them up if they weren’t so important,” McCarthy wrote.
McCarthy said the lights from Welcome All Road to I-285 west along Camp Creek Parkway have never worked.  He also cited more than 100 lights out on interstates throughout the city and on the west side.
We contacted East Point officials, along with a contact at the Department of Transportation and got an immediate response from East Point City Councilman Clyde Mitchell.  Mitchell said the lights in the city’s jurisdiction have been out for bid, and would be discussed by the City Council later this month.
We also contacted the Department of Transportation about the lights out on the expressways and will update you on the situation.
