Title: Possible Mercury Ban???
Post by: gailgrove on March 18, 2012, 05:06:24 PM
Say what??? I just heard about  this,  (http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2011/10/21/science-mercury-ban-vaccines.html) can you say crazy? Some treaty organization wants to ban mercury worldwide, I have no idea how this would at all be viable and we'd all be stuck with LEDs, funny how this isn't being published anywhere either... I doubt it would actually happen but it is a scary thought.

At least those creatures we call CFLs won't be around anymore. That's about all good that'll come from banning mercury.

I don't see what everyone has against CFLs, now I'm not saying that I like them but I also think they have their place. And we will lose pretty much every kind of lighting other than LED.

Well, halogens are still unaffected by this. :P

CFLs are just plain junk. I'd rather see PL or even linier fluorescent over CFL. CFLs are way to compact and are made out of plastic versus glass or metal. I won't miss CFLs if they ever come off the shelves.

As stupid as it may sound, I actually like CFLs! But they definitely can't be used everywhere. In some places they are worth using, it's a matter of choosing a decent brand. From my experience GE seems to be the best. Globe is getting a lot better too. And most importantly:

ALWAYS BASE BOWN/HORIZONTAL!!

I also enjoy troubleshooting non-working CFLs. But yeah... A 100% LED-lit world would be booooooring!

CFLs should be used as a temporary solution for incandescent fixture, until a real fluorescent fixture can be bought. Indeed, like Vince says, CFLs should be operated base down/horizontal, but i think that even horizontal burning isn't good for them, but only vertical base down buring.
In Israel, mercury thermometers for long time were totally replaced by digital thermometers. Same as sphygmomanometers.
Regarding to dental fillings: Mercury amalgams are used for dental fillings, but i think that there are good alternative materials to amalgam to make the fillings, that are even more aesthetic and have longer life than amalgams.
Mercury switchs were only in use in the US, and the mercury free switches have usually no problems if they are uses high quality components.

CFL on table lamps are bad idea if you have wild kids or often have kids over, another reason it's too close to people....due to radiation......plus I was helping someone with lighting and electricity in his house and found none dimming CFL operated on dimmers    :o :o  :o

I think if we have to keep CFL in production, I believe they should have manufacturing restriction such as ALL CFL should be dimmble and/or they should withstand in any kind of fixtures including in HID fixtures because I see TOOOOO many cases of CFL wrongfully in HID fixtures with the HID ballast actually running!!!!!!!!!!

Or any other type of restriction....people just don't read the warnings and can be dangerous! There are no protection in the modern CFL and I feel safer using either halogen or even LED!

You mean UV radiation? I have noticed UV levels that are comparable to black lights...
Also, the EM radiation theory is completely phony, as proved by Health Canada.
