Forgotten Underpass Lights
This railway underpass still has the original mercury recessed square lighting mostly intact. They have long since been replaced with a pair of HPS wallpacks at each of of the underpass but have been left up because of how difficult it is to remove them.

Anyway the fixtures appear to be Holophane recessed squares from 1963. Not sure how they're ballasted although I didn't see any signs of a ballast inside the open one. This style of underpass lighting seems pretty rare, the older underpasses either used mercury wallpacks or HO/PG fluorescent. First time seeing recessed squares.

Wow really cool! Would be awesome to see them used again, even if converted to LED. I love recessed squares. Cool

Yeah, would be neat to see these reused too. Would have been neat to see how they looked all working. I guess in 1963 they were probably burning clear mercs.

Kerr Hall at Ryerson has the same recessed squares over the canopies but those were incandescent. They were disconnected and replaced with MH canopy lighting in the 90s.

Funny i love recessed squares but hate shoeboxes. Smile

Same here, recessed squares have a vintage charm to them while shoeboxes are just boring. Laughing Although I'd be suprised to see a new parking lot with shoeboxes instead of LEDs.
