Crouse-Hinds carried the old Westinghouse designations over until 1985 when the OVS/OVM/OVL were introduced. The OVL was nothing more than a repainted OV-50. So I would assume that the OVW is the updated model designation for the Canadian OV-25.
Note that this fixture was actually introduced by Westinghouse, not Cooper Crouse-Hinds. Westinghouse ditched their traditional OV-15 and OV-25 silverliners in 1978 or 1979 (NiMo do you know the correct year?) and made them until they were bought out by Cooper. Cooper made them for about two years until they rolled out thier own OVS and OVM to replace the OV-15 and OV-25. The OVC was introduced around 1989-ish as a more compact (lower cost, perhaps to appeal to utilities as lower-budget HPS retrofits?).
1978 was when Westinghouse rolled out the 4th generation OV-25 (I have one). And Cooper redid the upper housing on the OV-50, relocating the P-Cell more rearward. Now, the OVS/OVM was introduced in 1985 and the OVC replaced the OVS.
But the OVC was only made up to 150W and the OVS was made until the OVX was introduced in 1992. The OVC was superseded by the OVZ. Not sure when the OVM was discontinued but I've seen them with dates of manufacture as late as 1995. The OVF came out in 1992 with the OVX. I guess at some point they realized they could stick a drop lens on the OVF and get rid of the OVM.
I believe the OVD uses a different reflector than the OVF because of the cutoff optics necessitating a faceted reflector. Now, here's where it gets really interesting. The OVL, when first introduced in the mid-80s with the OVS had the P-Cell set back. In its final incarnation, the OVL had the P-Cell moved back to the original Westinghouse position.
It's funny how designs repeat themselves. Those rear-PC OV-50s must not have been made for too long since I've only seen a couple in person. I'd imagine by the 80s when they were in production, most 1000W cobrahead installations were obsolete in favor of 400W HPS. I guess the only place they saw decent numbers would have been shopping plazas that still preferred the white light of 1000W MV or 1000W MH.
I think this is still the L250, because Parrot175 (on Youtube) has one, if I remember.
Also @streetlight98, Cooper Lighting are still making the OVX, OVF, OVY, since prouduction in the 90's. Correct me if i'm wrong. Plus I don't know if the OVL is still being manufactured.
It is the OV-25. The "L-250" and "L-150" names are fake. Yep the OVZ, -Y, -H, -F, and -X are all still being made. OVD, OVG, and OVL were dropped a few years back.
I guess I'm going to have to changing title name. By the way, is this the fourth generation of the OV-25? Just saying, I remember that there were generations of the OV-25s.
It is the 4th generation. First was the flatbottom, second was the single door between 1964 and 1970, and third generation from 1970 to 1978. I have all of them in my personal collection.
Very recently I acquired a Westinghouse OV-15 that's a factory 250w HPS unit. It's 1978 vintage, still got the good ol' 1970-78 Silverliner design. I also have a 1977 OV-15 175w MV.
I have a 4th generation OV-15 from 1979 with the 1/2" threaded rods and another one which I assume is early 80s that has 3/8" carriage bolts through the top housing The 1/2" one had a 200W HPS ballast (either 208 or 480V single tap; forget which) that I converted to 85W induction and the 3/8" one is 100W MV, 120V. Both are pre-Crouse-Hinds versions but the info is worn off the paper labels. I went by the capacitor on the 200W HPS one for a date. The 100W MV one has no capacitor. I'll have to inspect the ballast for a date code if that label is readable.
I'm seeing the dividing line between the third and fourth generation models, LOL. I'll need to check the diameter of the rods in mine but they're the threaded rods. My 1977 OV15 is also the same.
