Not completely lighting related but it was part of the display so I'd thought I'd include it along with the old lamps.
Anyways, this pic shows how a early electrical service and circuit would have been wired with knob and tube wiring, you can see how they used separate wires instead of cables for the branch circuit that leads from the panel to the switch and then the lampholder .

Also, you can sort of see that 1 kW MH lamp that you were talking about on my other pic, don't know why they'd called it a mercury lamp
