Honestly, can this get any better than this in rarity???
This is something I do NOT see everyday, sure I see MV everyday, but not late 50s cobraheads! Those are the rare OV-14Bs which was once common in Canada, and not so common in the USA!

There was about 10 to 12 of them in this road alone....there are other 2 I know of near me.....There may be more out there that I have not yet discovered!

They mounted these lights rather low on these poles.

R.Shield, they each have it's own remote photocells, if you look really carefully you can see a black photocell just about 2 feet above the bracket of the arm below the cable in a shadow.....

In BGE (my local electric company) before and during 1965, all the fixtures with exceptions of the NEMA fixtures and the open bottom fixtures were all remote PC! That includes the OV-12, LM Unistyle, Silver GE M-250R, Silver GE M-400, Silver GE M-250, OV-25 series, AE series 13-000, all clamshells, LM Unistyle 400 and a few others.

But by 1966 when the OV-15s came out and the Grey GE M-250R and the McGraw-Edison Unistyle 175....they had internal photocells..HOWEVER even after 1965, the higher wattage (Medium sized fixtures) were STILL remote PC except for the GE M-400A1 powerdoors........So that means the Grey GE M-400, OV-25s and Unistyle 400 were still remote PCs. By the time those fixtures got discontinued.....all the streetlights were interally photocells...

But on the other hand..the neighboring electric company of BGE, which is PEPCO.....had internal Photocells VERY early......a lot of their clamshells had internal photocells as well as the early cobraheads, all of them!!! How Shocking!

But to make things even more ODD!!!!!! BGE may have been late in internal photocell, but they were pretty early into accepting low wattage MV, such as those OV-14Bs, and they have a good number of OV-10s and of course you know we have open bottom fixtures which were an attempt of trying to increase low wattage MV fixtures sales as they were not common in those days!

You won't find any low wattage MV clamshells in PEPCO. The earliest low wattage cobraheads in PEPCO are the OV-12 and the AE Series 13s and the later 60s McGraw Edison Unistyle 175s....but most of the MV cobraheads in PEPCO are from the 70s which are the ITT 13s, GE M-250R1 and OV-15...

Interesting eh???

We do have group relay photocell setups in BGE though....

Ahh. Narragensett Electric was pretty early in the integral PC thing. What was the point of a remote PC? I could see that if the ballast was remote, but if the ballast is internal, why have a remote PC? Is it to increase lineman safty when working on streetlights so they don't have to wear gloves?

I wish I knew the original fixtures that Denver had. Before the huge HPS changout Xcel did in the 80's.

There IS a Form109 I spotted on a utility pole hovering over an abandoned fenced in area, the pole is long disconnected and the refractor is cracked, maybe that was one of the originals...

But this is a nice shot! I would like to see one of these in service someday, but I haven't yet. Even when I was in Maryland, I Never went in an area with these.

Why did the early Westinghouse cobraheads have the two doors? Like this and the Flat bottom OV-25's.
joe_347V   [Nov 26, 2011 at 06:17 PM]
Didn't the early OV 50s have two doors too?
GullWhiz   [Nov 26, 2011 at 06:20 PM]
Ian, the Westinghouse Cobraheads were not only ones that had 2 doors, the Line Materials cobraheads also had two doors for the medium ones.....
And Ian, this may help you answer a LOT of questions about Denver in this book
streetlight98   [Nov 26, 2011 at 06:30 PM]
I'm curious as to why the older lights had more than one door too. The early 327 in a parking lot here have fins and two doors as well.
GullWhiz   [Nov 26, 2011 at 06:41 PM]
Ian, this is the best I could find found right here

It's easier to attach a streetlight pole with the door close but need a place to bolt the fixture in...that's why...

Very nice row of lites! And they have been working for over 50 years with very few replacements, impressive!

I know what would get better in Rarity:
joe_347V   [Jan 08, 2012 at 08:37 PM]
I don't get it. Razz
mercuryvaporrocks   [Jan 08, 2012 at 08:49 PM]
I'd say that about mercury vapor L-250's, now those are more rare. Laughing
LilCinnamon   [Jan 08, 2012 at 09:14 PM]
The character's name is "Rarity" xD Get it now?
GullWhiz   [Jan 09, 2012 at 01:05 AM]
Ever seen a OV-14B in person? I bet about 85-90% have never seen/don't remember seeing them in person! I only have seen 15 of them in service in person...(there's a bit more under my electric company that I haven't seen /yet/)
gailgrove   [Jan 09, 2012 at 01:30 AM]
I have seen 2, both where in Montreal, I have a picture of one here! Very Happy
joe_347V   [Jan 09, 2012 at 02:37 AM]
@Ian, oh I see. Laughing

@Jace, nope I actually haven't seen one of these yet but how many of you have seen a Powerlite B2217 in person? Razz
gailgrove   [Jan 09, 2012 at 02:40 AM]
I have held one in person. Razz
GullWhiz   [Jan 11, 2012 at 03:09 PM]
How many watt was it? Was it the 2 separate coil style ballast like mine? Pretty heavy was it? Mine is just as heavy as a modern 400 watt MV fixture!
gailgrove   [Jan 11, 2012 at 04:35 PM]
I don't know how many watts it is, the early B2217s had a screw instead of a latch and I didn't have a screwdriver with me, if I can get the light I will find out. Cool
joe_347V   [Jan 12, 2012 at 05:13 AM]
So far I've seen B2217s in 100w or 200w HPS, I'm not sure what they were originally but my guess is 175w and 250w MV.
