Looks like a trailer.
lite_lover   [Aug 12, 2015 at 02:07 AM]
Yep it's a trailer.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 12, 2015 at 02:17 AM]
Hooked up to a pickup assume?

I spy some nice old GEs in there.
lite_lover   [Aug 12, 2015 at 02:33 AM]
Yep it's hooked up to a pickup, the trailer is 18 ft long.

Sweet...that is perfect for hauling around 8 foot fixtures. The possibility exists that my first vehicle ma8y be a 1971 Deuce and a half...2.5 ton military cargo truck. Telling people that story gets mixed reactions. Laughing A friend found an ad in the newspaper in Port Townsend WA for a truck for 600 bucks...no pics...just an address. ..he went to look at it thinking it was a rust bucket pickup or something but Ended up buying it anyway...then tried to resell for a grand...then 600...had it on Craigslist for months etc...and zero interest. I may be ending up with it given to me next June. people crack up at the idea of me driving that around every day but I am 100 percent serious.
lite_lover   [Aug 12, 2015 at 07:34 AM]
Yes, it's good for hauling fixtures, materials, machinery, poles etc. Very Happy A Deuce and a half would be awesome, lots of possibilities there, does it have a diesel engine?
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 12, 2015 at 05:59 PM]
I hope it is one of those LDS multifuel units. they were originally designed to run on gasoline...diesel...or anything else. And it is possible to run them on used motor oil thinned down...or used cooking oil. I just need the filtration infrastructure...and time during college.

So yeah you could call it a diesel. I can however see issues with trying to move back to California around 2020 and dealing with the emissions laws. You could register it as historic but that has its own. Set of problems...like not being able to use it for work.

so yeah I plan to be driving around on alternative fuel every day in a Deuce. ideally Id like to get my hands on a later 80s...90s M939 series 5 ton version of the Deuce but that is way down the road for now...needing a CDL etc. But those are not multifuel and get like 10 MPG...NOT bad but not great either. But I think the 5 tons look much better.
lite_lover   [Aug 13, 2015 at 04:36 AM]
Yeah that would be nice if it's a diesel, then for sure you can run on alternative fuels like used motor oil or cooking oil, you'll get hungry driving around with the food aroma. Laughing Going to California could be an issue...if it's naturally aspirated, then a turbo would be an awesome addition to cut back the smoke and add some more horsepower. Cool Is it a cab and chassis or does it have a flatdeck or dump box?
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 13, 2015 at 06:34 AM]
Great to see someone else interested! If nothing else I can run diesel or gas...whichever is cheaper. as for the food Aroma I joke I will be stopping at fast food places for oil instead of burgers...I prefer Subway anyway as my go to fast food chain.

I am told the muffler is wrapped in a piece of flashing so obviously it needs replacement...so I might as well deal with a turbo then if needed. From my limited mechanical understanding (Yes I have been trying to better educate myself in the meantime) turbo's require a cooldown period though. And I will need a block heater for sure...driving around in the winter...in Alaska...in Fairbanks. I wonder what the electrical demands for one are...since if I live way off in the sticks with no city power I will need to size a generator accordingly for that and house loads...you know...8 foot high output fixtures etc. Laughing

I am told 20ft wooden bed...never seen that on a Deuce though. But perfect for hauling firewood...moving stuff back and forth between Alaska and California...etc.

And Deuces still tend to smoke like crazy and are super loud...you can hear those "whistler" turbo's a mile away...literally. Earplugs mandatory Laughing Never been at highway speed in one yet but I can imagine. ..and yet I plan to still add a radio...driving one umpteen thousand miles every year.

With a couple tanks (1 for collecting used cooking oil) and (2nd for the filtred oil) and a pump / filtering system you can add the filtered cooking oil to the diesel and run 50/50 for cost savings, the cooking oil may become too thick by itelf in cold weather, yeah if the muffler is wrapped in flashing it's done, might be hard to find a similar one tho but I'm not sure, the turbo also acts like a muffler so a smaller muffler may be ok and exhaust system should be no less than 4" for good flow. A cool down timer would only be required when running under a heavy load or driving at higher speeds then coming to a stop then you want to idle for about 5 mins to cool the turbo before shutting off the engine, driving around town won't create enough excess heat to cause the engine oil to "coke" in the turbo bearings. A block heater will be about 500W and would only need to operate an hour before starting, just make sure your batteries are good and charged for extra cranking in colder weather,a snort of WD-40 in the air intake may aid cold starts which is not as damaging to the engine as ether starting fluid..
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 13, 2015 at 10:03 AM]
oK interesting. Wow only an hour in subzero temps. ..ID think it would have to be plugged in constantly. And yes I know to use ether sparingly if at all. I also wonder how lead acid batteries do at minus 40 Fahrenheit...they'd freeze right?

My commute might be an hour plus each way...all on 2 lane highway and full blown freeway. So yeah not necessarily just driving around town.

If you want I can keep you posted on how this goes...
lite_lover   [Aug 13, 2015 at 07:42 PM]
Well, ok at -40°F it would need to be plugged in constantly, just thinking since you don't have city power, an hour or so of generator power should help, but will probably need longer at -30 /-40°F temps. Lead acid batteries at that temp will probably freeze at that temp, the only other option which is inconvenient is to bring them indoors overnight when it's that cold.

If you're on the highway right up to your destination then a turbo timer would be handy, or let it idle for 5 minutes once you park to cool down should be adequate.

Yes please keep me posted on how this goes. Cool
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 13, 2015 at 11:19 PM]
Yeah I am fine with waiting five minutes or so once I get there. What about using something other than lead acids...like gel cells?
lite_lover   [Aug 14, 2015 at 01:10 AM]
Sure gel cells would be better in cold weather, only drawback is the higher cost.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 14, 2015 at 02:38 AM]
Good to know. I know my 8D lead acid house batteries do fine pretty much outside...in subfreezing but not subzero temps. But I could swear they don't hold a charge nearly as long in those temps. And always use distilled water not tap city water. And don't overfill the water...it dilutes the battery acid thus weakening the chemical reaction. I know...I did it once and thankfully they did survive it...but boiled off extra water for awhile. That said I have a pretty decent charger on them too...don't know then 12v output in amps but it sure revs up a little Honda EU2000i generator...ever seen one?
lite_lover   [Aug 14, 2015 at 04:25 AM]
No I don't think I've seen that model.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 14, 2015 at 06:09 AM]
Interesting. Way better than those old Briggs and Strafton units...loud and unreliable to say the least.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Oct 29, 2015 at 03:13 AM]
So good news! I might still be ending up with the truck...should be seeing it in pictures soon...so I'll know what I'm getting into... Laughing Very Happy

Nice!! Looking forward to seeing the pictures! Very Happy
