That's because the lamp is designed to be used base up only. Wink

This specimen only have white 'paint' at the top of the arc tube. How does this work? Confused

Well the upper electrode (the one closest to the base) technically doesn't need the ceramic insulation since the heat from the discharge keeps it hot. Universal burning lamps have both electrodes insulated so they can run in all positions.

i have seen these 360W in universal burn...if i find one thats not EOL i will take it home and compare it to the regular 400W

i see this has slightly reduced lumens like ES fluorescent lamps. I wonder if this would struggle to start in cold temps like 34W t12s? lol Razz Laughing

Probably different halide chemistry.
