HPS Philips Phailure
From a complaint of flickering streetlight, I lit them using the PC bypass switch, and they lit, but since it was a work order, I changed out the lamp anyway and this is what I found. The arc tube was just resting on the lead-in pin.

Oh well, it's an ALTO what do you expect Rolling Eyes
GullWhiz   [Jan 29, 2011 at 07:26 PM]
Actually this happens to most HPS when they have been cycling for a long time. the weilds get loose from all the cycling and the ignitor actions. I have had a few GE's do that! But yeah most happens with Philips, but it's not because it's an ALTO..

This lamp looks well spent, but I can't really see the date code on the lamp it looks either 2003 or 2007...But it looks like it had a lot of use!

Rich you aren't the only one to find those, my friends finds them and I have some lamps like that in the collection.

Thermal cycling could be a likely cause of a bad weld but also the pole could have been subjected to severe winds or vehicle accident.

Phillips seems to have a lot of failiures ( the MH one too)
gmercury2000   [Jan 30, 2011 at 04:57 AM]
Ive founf the Philips MH lamps are not too bad however the newer GE MH lamps are horrible. I would say the last 40 MH fixtures I have serviced at least 25-30 had been serviced in the last year and had new GE lamps installed and the lamps had failed. All the equipment was in good operating order such as line voltage ballast voltage and capacitor values were all good, the lamps are just horrible!

Solution: use Sylvania Very Happy
streetlight98   [Jan 30, 2011 at 01:40 PM]
Yes, I find Sylvania to be best for MH as well as HPS and MV
RCM   [Jan 31, 2011 at 03:35 AM]
I've seen this on Ushio lamps as well! Usually from a really long time cycling
gailgrove   [Feb 14, 2011 at 12:32 AM]
I also like EYE lamps, they seem to be very good!
streetlight98   [Feb 14, 2011 at 10:43 PM]
Yes, but EYE lamps aren't as common here and some are expensive. EYE is the only one who still makes 700w MV lamps though.....
rlshieldjr   [Aug 24, 2012 at 10:43 PM]
I recently replaced more Philips HPS with this same problems. Relaced with Sylvania, 250 & 400w
@ Jace, most likely 2007, as this intersection was built in 2010.
mercuryvaporrocks   [Aug 24, 2012 at 11:08 PM]
Duquesne Light uses GE HPS lamps which seem to hold up pretty well and West Penn Power uses Sylvania HPS lamps which are a little better than Phillips but the non cycling lamps are horrible.
GullWhiz   [Aug 25, 2012 at 12:28 AM]
GE HPS are good, it's the GE MH that's horrible
mercuryvaporrocks   [Aug 25, 2012 at 01:10 AM]
The GE MV lamps aren't good either, the newer ones only last 3-4 years now.
Antstar85   [Aug 25, 2012 at 03:00 AM]
I have removed many lamps from service that have done this and they were sylvanias.
GullWhiz   [Aug 25, 2012 at 03:18 AM]
One question, where are the PC bypass switch(s) found?
rlshieldjr   [Aug 25, 2012 at 11:51 PM]
@Jace - the PC bypass switch is in the service cabinet, also used for lighted street name signs. Most of our lights are group controlled, however we still have lights with thier own PC.
>> Many of the GEs I've replaced are leakers.
joe_347V   [Aug 26, 2012 at 04:22 AM]
I've noticed that GE HPS lamps seem to leak, all of my used ones have leaked.
