The new setup the AEL Autobahn
Here is my recently changed setup to my backyard light. I got this light off eBay not to long ago since I've been wanting one of these for a while. It also came with DTL's LED friendly photocell and is super sensitive. It's practically dark before the fixture turns on. I also wanted to shorten up the bracket so installed a lithonia bracket that I've had for years. This light does a very good job lighting up the yard with a very nice distribution.

Nice. There are some of these in the northwest corner of RI in the Pascoag Utility District Co-Op in Burrillville. They're a community-owned utility since the 90s. They used Thomas & Betts DuraStars during the HPS takeover and after that used OVHs and then drop lens 115s and now they're testing out these LEDs. They're a little dimmer than the HPS but a much nicer light, though the distribution is more concentrated.

These are pretty nice for LED fixtures...a good choice. The pole & arm are nice too. I'd go for an older photocontrol so it comes on as the sun sets. Plus it would be nice irony to have a vintage control on a modern light.

Is there a reason that LEDs need special photocells? Are the PCs just supposed to be extended life units or do they operate some special way to benefit LEDs somehow? I like the current "normal" DTL photocells. They're reliable, low cost, and have many options. I hope the LED DTL PCs are of the same high quality.

I think LED have a high inrush current on the initial startup and according to DTL's website, the LED photocontrol can withstand that. The towns where I have seen these controls used have all seem to be holding up well. I have not seen one day burner yet.

Ah you know of others that have used the DTL LED PCs as well? Yeah DTL really is good stuff. 120V brown DTLs with cadmium sulfide eyes were used here in the mid-to-late 90s to early 2000s. They weren't used that long here but there are a lot of them because they were used during the peak of the HPS changeout here. Then they went back to Fisher Pierce PCs, ordering 120V units in brown. Prior to the brown DTLs, in the early-to-mid 90s, they used Ripely and Fisher Pierce units in baby blue (120-277V units) and before that (from the 60s until around 1990) they used the same photocells except with a gray cover (still 120-277v though).

Yeah the towns who took over the lights from us seem to be installing DTL's. Holyoke had been installing the FP LED suntechs on HPS floods and ironically they have been working better on HPS fixtures than LED.

I'm going to get a night shot of this fixture when I get a chance for you all to see.

Ah I guess you can tell by the green cover? Green covers are traditionally for 347V photocells but 347V is only used in Canada so you won't be seeing any of those here anyway. Laughing

Oh yeah, I've been working on the poles these fixtures are on so I'm able to get a good look. We still transfer the fixtures to the new poles when we do a pole transfer, we just don't maintain the fixture anymore. I still go and check to make sure the fixture lights though after I reconnect the power.

I've seen NGrid transfer a M-250R2 with a midding door and reflector before. Rolling Eyes Then i had to report the light afterwords. Normally if a light is missing parts, they won't bother with it and don't transfer it. They'll remove it and then like six weeks later a new fixture on a 6ft upsweep arm. If a light doesn't work they won't fix it though. Like when they shut off some of our lights here vis open caps and then turned them back on six months later, they put new PCs in but didn't replace bad lamps. So i had to report those lights and they got a new lamp and another new photocell. Very wasteful. Sad
