Nice oldies. I wonder if this rapid start ballast made by Advance is any good as post-PCB free version?
xmaslightguy   [Jun 19, 2010 at 02:56 AM]
They seem to work just as well...may even be slightly brighter than the newer models Smile

I did notice that it does not say "No PCBs" anywhere ... I'm guessing that means these may contain that stuff Shocked In reality I probably should not even be using these ballasts. Confused
Silverliner14B   [Jun 19, 2010 at 05:04 AM]
Yes they do have PCBs. Most ballasts made before '78 had PCBs.
rjluna2   [Jun 19, 2010 at 04:27 PM]
I thought they switched to PCB free around 1976 Question
Form109   [Jun 19, 2010 at 05:20 PM]
I Believe PCB's were banned in the United States on the Year 1979,Because of the Toxicity of the Compounds.
Silverliner14B   [Jun 19, 2010 at 06:56 PM]
PCBs were made until July 1st '77 but manufacturers were allowed to use up existing stock until the end of '78. I have a '77 F96T12 ballast with PCBs, also my OV-15 is from the same year and the capacitor is an older York kind made for Westinghouse.

So how much of a concern it that? ... Basically should i discontinue use of these & get rid of them?
SeanB~1   [Jun 20, 2010 at 06:51 AM]
If it starts to leak a sticky tar then you will need to wear polypropylene gloves ( not rubber unless you wear surgical gloves and regular rubber gloves over those that you discard as well) to clean up the mess. The whole lot then should go for incineration at a Hazardoud material incinerator.

If you just keep them in a cardboard box wrapped in a paper inner and a plastic outer bag then there is no issue.

Looks just like the Ballast in my Wraparound!..matter of fact it is the same Class P!...should i be Concerned? Shocked
SeanB~1   [Jun 20, 2010 at 04:19 PM]
No, unless it leaks tar.

Of course don't eat a meal off it either.
streetlight98   [Aug 14, 2012 at 09:05 PM]
How dangerous is a PCB containing ballast once it has leaked tar? Aren't the PCBs contained in the capacitor?
A_lights   [Aug 14, 2012 at 09:13 PM]
well the tar isn't the PCBS only the oily clear liquid, but yes I could get mixed, this is only a problem at ballast EOL, make sure if it leaks you remove it with rubber gloves that's all
streetlight98   [Aug 14, 2012 at 09:21 PM]
It's not toxic to breathe though, only to touch?
A_lights   [Aug 15, 2012 at 01:25 AM]
correct. ..it can soak through the skin and is cancerous
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 20, 2013 at 01:09 AM]
If left alone it should be fine even if it's leaked a little bit of tar as long as it isn't sticky...in essence keep these and you won't die from having them in your house...
These are identical to mine with the exception of the "coils" and mine is rated for energy-saver lamps...
A_lights   [Jan 20, 2013 at 01:12 AM]
i have quite a few lights with old PCB containing ballasts in use, dosent concern me, I use only full power lamps anyways
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 20, 2013 at 01:14 AM]
Me too! In fact today I tested the other fixture from my school with the Universal ballast...
