Walmart LED parking lot lights
A recently opened (10/21) Walmart (that I work at) has LED lighting in the parking lot lighting. The camera doesn't quite capture the color which is not quite as white as it appears. Actually kinda blue in tone so it vaguely makes the lot feel as if its lit by flashlights or reading lights. One has failed and all of them have a weird small fluctuation in brightness at times. Brightness isn't also as it appears though the lot is evenly and well lit.

Hey Devonte, welcome back! Smile Hmm the Walmart near me was remodeled a couple years ago and they used really bright PSMH shoeboxes with two lights per pole (sometimes one light). The original lights were 400W MH (regular MH) with four lights per pole. The lot was very dim before but it's lit like day now.

You mentioned that the brightness in reality isn't what it appears in the picture. Is it brighter or dimmer in real life? Looks a little in the picture. The Walmart here is lit like day lol. I love parking lots lit by cobraheads, but usually cobrahead-lit lots are very dim. I like a nice bright parking lot since it's easier to find the car and it's easier to see people walking around when you're trying to back out of a spot, etc.

I actually haven't minded most of the LED installations I've seen here. They're a little blueish but other than that, seem to mimic a MH lamp. It's the LED fixture that I mind. LED street lights are so hideous looking. They look like aluminum waffles. The LeoTek ones look like toilet seat lids. Cooper and Hubbell make LED cobraheads, which are nice (OVH, OVF, and RMC). Nobody else makes LED cobraheads though. Sad

I don't care for the look of LED streetlights I guess but I honestly don't particularly care for the ubiquitous "cobrahead" style either, I like NEMAs or floods instead. But that's just me.
And yeah, for a parking lot I'd much rather "white" light since it's easier to find your car, etc. Although honestly for regular streetlighting I'm really suprised LPS isn't more common!
The one thing I DO like about LED and induction-fluorescent streetlights is energy savings (I'm all for that, though I don't like seeing vintage MVs replaced) and the white light as opposed to the nasty (IMO) orange of HPS. It's much nicer on residential streets IMO, it feels more "moonlight-like" and "nighttimey" to me.

I recently went through my local shopping centre that it has been recently converted from Metal Halide foursome light fixture to LED foursome. Boy, it was not so bright as it was before Sad

they're slightly dimmer in person than they are rendered by the camera....the color the camera captures also makes it appear a MH-Type cool white when in reality in person it has a slight blue hue. the fixtures themselves are glary to look at directly but they make good use of their optics...it appears the LED is centered in the middle of the fixture and aims upward, light is then bounced down from the reflector so the LED's aren't directly visable.

It sounds like you are describing GE LEDs (which makes sense since WalMart has a contract with GE). Yeah GE seems to be the only LED manufacturer that uses reflectors to direct the light of the LEDs, which is smart and seems to distribute the light well, but boy are they glarey! Their LED street lights are designed with the same idea of using a reflector and I think the distribution is nice but those reflectors are powerful!

I have no idea what they are,i'll try & get a daytime picture of the fixture's so you or somebody else can make a positive I.D on them. Cool

Sure. Looking forward to the pic(s). Cool Here there are a number of parking lots with LEDs but I haven't see any WalMarts here with LEDs yet.

the LED's in this Walmart extend beyond the parking lot....they're also in the coolers & freezers Plus the portion of dairy with the eggs & milk. other than that the inside is typical fluorescent strips.
streetlight98   [Feb 17, 2015 at 05:36 PM]
I know the meat and dairy sections (like cooler but still an open shelf) are still fluorescents, but the coolers might be LED. LEDs are actually great for use in coolers since LEDs achieve the greatest LPW in sub-zero temps. Shocked It's the heat that really kills them (drivers can overheat and also when the LEDs themselves are subject to heat, they dim out). When the LEDs dim out, there will be a noticeable yellow shift to the light. Since white LEDs are really blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor, as the LEDs dim out, there is less blue so the phosphors make the light more yellowish. And over time the phosphors degrade and then there will be a blue shift. So even if the fixture is perfectly designed and the LEDs never dim out, the phosphors will decay over time and cause a blue shift. So either way the color will change over time lol.

I see so pay the people $8 and not even use E-LPS to keep it the same low cost Laughing Sorry I just had to say that, I like Walmart some things they do make me Laughing

no I meant in this Walmart those sections are LED....in dairy only the Egg's and Milk are LED Lit. the cheese/meat/butter,ect is lit by fluorescent's...the Frozen department with the Ice Cream,Frozen dinners is also lit by LED Fixtures.
streetlight98   [Feb 20, 2015 at 12:09 AM]
Oh I see. Yeah same at my local WalMart. All the freezer/fridge cabinets with doors have LEDs and the open ones with no doors (prepacked deli meat, cheese, yogurt, etc) is fluorescent. The meats are lit with 3000K Sylvania lamps and the yogurt/cheese/hotdog/pudding/whatever section used to be too but they relamped the section with 5000K GE SPX50 lamps, the same lamps used to light the rest of the store. So now the meat department has warm white lamps while the entire rest of the store is lit by 5000K.

the Flourescent lights in the Produce & Dairy sections of the store are warm white....im assuming around 3000K. elsewhere the above lights look like typical cool white.
