Yeah the new caps aren't GE Brand. I got three of the new caps and they are a completly different brand. According to my cap it says "Anhui Juan Kuang Electric Co." And on the top it says "JKLite"
Yeah, same. I'm not a fan of the new style M-400 and M-400A. It seems I like each generation of the M-400 series less and less lol. I like the 60s version the best, then the M-400 split door version, then the M-400R2. For the M-250 series (single door lights only) here's how I rank them:
- M-250R1
- silver M-250R
- 80s style M-250R2
- 1992/1993 flat door M-250R2
- gray M-250R
- mid-90s-present M-250R2
I have to say though, the M-250R1s have terrible hinges. the hinges are too small and they snap off like toothpicks if your not careful. The M-250R is probably the best built out of the M-250 series, but that's expected since it came first.
Didn't G.E. discontinue the M400A2 and M400R2 for a while? I remember for the longest time they didn't have those on their website. They just started making them again a few years ago.
I'm thinking they may have kept making them and it was just an unlisted "special order" fixture. I really wonder why GE still makes the M-400A2 and M-400R2, as I've never seen a new one installed. The only new one I've ever seen was the one you got and sent to Tony.

Actually speaking of M400A2's, I just recently started seeing them popping up around here. Well, on Interstate 75. They are using M400A2's with drop lenses as replacements at exits that have cobraheads. All the I-75 exits here are getting their highmasts replaced too. They're replacing the poles and putting up new HPS highmast lumes. At least they aren't trying out LED highmast lumes here . Knock on wood
Ahh yeah sometimes the server will accidentally publish a comment twice lol. Can you get pics of the new M-400A2s? The M-400A2 is probably my favorite cobrahead that's still in production since from far away, it still looks like a 60s M-400 (the refractor is on the same angle, the door is on the same angle, and Pc is in the same spot. So if i look at a M-400A2 without my glasses on, it could almost pass off for a 60s gray M-400.
@ Mike, I'll try to get a pic of one of the new M400A2's. They are on I-75 so I can't promise I'll be able to get a pic since the speed limit is 70 MPH.
I'll take my camera with me to work and maybe if I have to make a delivery and use the interstate, I can try pulling over off the side of the road for a minute to get the picture.
Interstates here in Colorado have a speed limit up to 75. In the areas where there is a long stretch of interstate and not really any big towns or cities go up to 75. They are changing a lot of interstates from 70 to 75.
There's one toll road in texas that has a speed limit up to 85. But I haven't been on it.
Wow 75 and 85! I've never heard of a freeway where you can legally drive that fast lol. They still drive that fast here but not legally since the highest speed limit is 65 lol. On the freeways here we have 65, 55, and 50 MPH. There's a part of I-95 known as the Pawtucket S curves section and that section of I-95 is a 45 MPH zone. No one goes that slow though lol.
Yeah, there's some roads with pretty high speed limits in the US. Over here in Ontario the max is 100km/h or just a bit more than 60 MPH. Back in the early 70s the max speed here was 70 MPH. People here usually go around 110-120 km/h which is around 70-75 MPH.
When I was driving through some of the States like Montana and North Dakota the speed limits were up to 85 MPH. Here on the freeways it's 100km/h about 60 MPH also and of course people go over 110 -120 as well, only the Coquihalla Highway here is 110 km/h.
honestly I like both the AEL Model 125 and the GE M400R3. even though the GE seems like a Clone,but then again that's not anything new....remember the comparison between M400/OV-25 and the Revere 2600 which seemed to take design ques from both fixtures?
the AE 125 in my experience is far more common. probably because it's a cheaper light.
Eh I'm not really a fan of either the M-400 or 125. And yes, Revere made some pretty hideous designs by combining the existing GE and Westinghouse designs.
I guess that's in your area. Here there are no AEL lights at all. The closest things are the 113s put up in the early-to-mid 90s here. I think the M-400/M-400A is more common simply because GE is a bigger company. Smaller utility companies seem to use Cooper or AEL since they're cheaper and large utilities like National Grid and Florida Power tend to use more GE lights since GE gives huge discounts to large companies because they buy in such massive quantities, making their fixtures more expensive for the "litte guys". It's not because GE uses more expensive parts. The paint on GE lights is superior to Cooper or AEL but I honestly don't think GE fixtures are any better built than AEL.
