US Rte 6 and RI Rte 10 in 1952!
|
This is what the Olneyville Expressway looked like when it was completed in 1952! I think that's a GE Form 109 (400W MV) in the foreground. Here's what it looks like today. The Form 109 pole was replaced by the double truss pole in the streetview in the late 60s when they extended the Rte 6 freeway from Plainfield Street to the newly-built Interstate 295. If you look closely at the streetview truss, you'll see that the left truss is newer looking than the right truss. Originally the pole was single-headed, just like the Form 109 pole, but NGrid added the left truss in the early 2000s. There was probably a shoulder-mounted pole on the left before but it was long gone before I was born. NGrid probably found it easier to tack another arm on the median-mounted pole than replace the new pole, especially if the foundation was damaged.
