Palmerston Boulevard Lighting
These post tops date from the early 1900s. Back then, there wasn't as much of a need to light the road so short post top mounted fixtures were used which had more spill light to light the sidewalks. These fell out of use in the 1930s when arm mounted lights like radial waves and gumballs became popular.

Originally equipped with incandescent lamps, these have since been retrofitted with 70w metal halide lamps using can ballasts mounted in the poles or on the column in the case of the pair of lights at the gate.

Nice! Glad to see them retrofitted. Smile

Yeah, I'm glad to see they repainted them and retrofitted them to MH. The city proposed replacing them outright with cast aluminium poles and new posttops back in 2004 but the residents complained so they got retrofitted and repainted instead.
