Two of these oldies reside at the intersection of Woodruff and Firestone in Downey, CA. I found the bite marks from the original luminaire behind the current shaded M400A, appears the original fixture was most likely an OV20 Pendant.
Look at all of those lights! Lots of them.....looks well LIT!!! only it should, and SUPPOSED to look like THIS in CA highways......but it's opposite....CA highways being VERY DARK!
Yup Jace is correct the California freeways are very dark. The lights are generally at exits and merges. Imagine driving on a dark Los Angeles freeway with the bright skyglow above you?
Hmm here I-295 is only lit at the exits and so is I-95 from the CT line to exit 10. From Exit 10 to the Mass line (exit 30) it's all continuously lit (at first with OVFs on tall davits at exit 10, then connecting to newer M-400 FCOs on davits at Exit 11 where I-295 starts, both exits where originally lit with short long-armed davits with M-250R2s (previously mercs). Then after Exit 11, there's a string of M-250R2s on short davits (which aren't maintained all that well but they do exist...) before the M-400R2s on tall davits and the jersey barrier take over from Exit 12 to Exit 17. Strangely there are stretches of M-400R2s controlled by relays and other stretched by PCs and it alternates back and fourth over the few mile stretch.
After that it's short poles with M-250R2s alternating between the shoulders and the jersy barrier, which is all controlled by individual PCs until after the highmasts, where the strings were all retrofitted for relays, though you occasioanlly see the old PCs still on the original M-250R2s when they replaced the mercs in the 90s. That string is interupted by the new I-195 interchange (exit 19 for northbound, 20 for south) which is lit by both OVF and M-400 FCOs on davits as well as the highmast set up at exit 22. Then it's back the alternating davits until you get into Pawtucket (which was Blackstone Valley electric territory).
From the Pawtucket line to Exit 28 there are short trusses with long arms (most are gone now and are short davits with M-250R2s with the break-away bases installed). I remember more trusses in the past... Then at Exit 28 to the mass line there's a mix of relay-controlled drop lens M-400R2s, OVM, new M-400, and an ITT 25 on tall davits with 250W OVS and M-250R2s on the ramps. The lights in BVE territory also used to be idividually controlled but now are relay controlled, as newer lights lack PC receptacles. However, for the Exit 28 to mass line stretch, the ramps were always relay-controlled even though the highway itself was PC-controlled.
