I wonder if there's something you can do to preserve the cord somehow.....spraying it with something....

I guess some sort of sealer would work but it'd just be easier and cheaper to replace to cord.

Shocked I've never NOS stock that old before, nice! I personally would replace the cord to a newer one but I'll keep the old one just in case I'll need to use again.
