Shiny brand new GE M-400R3 - guess what? It's a 400w mercury vapor! And this is not an archive photo take prior to the 2008 MV ballast ban, I took this pic yesterday ;-) Found on Imperial Highway in west LA near the beach. There are a bunch of MVs there, mostly OV-25s on series circuits, with one old L-M Unistyle 400 and some replacement AE 125s (all MV) and GE M400R3s (both MV and HPS). All mercs here are clear mercs! Do they still make series mercs or is this old stock? BTW, that NEMA tag is really pale! Shocked

That's what I would like to find out. Series mercs are the only new mercs I see going up here and rather infrequently.

It might be a metal Halide fixture. My utility here installs brand new Metal Halide M-400 R3's and puts Mercury lamps in them. Or they would put some older lights that are Mercury Vapor say an M-400 R2 from the 1990's or a bit below, and install them to replaced old failed fixtures, like one M-400 R2 from the 80' replaced an M-400 R3 from the 2000's.

To this M-40 R3, it looks like it was made in the 2006-2008, because of the bumps on the door and the NEMA tag, I would possible say 2007 or 2006. This might be the same age as my M-400 R3 I got from the re-store.

I doubt they even make series mercs since all mercury vapor ballasts are banned, this is most likely a NOS GE M-400.

That's what I said, manufacturers haven't made a mercury vapor light in 4 years.

I was agreeing with you... Anyways my point is it isn't really classifiable as NOS since it is only 4 years or so old.

I think GE still makes series ballasts for high pressure sodium streetlights.

Yep. The M-250A2 is available with a series ballast with it mounted in the top housing. IMO, if they only make 'em with top mounted series ballasts, they should use the M-250R2 housing. Can you use, let's say a series incandescent with a series merc and series HPS on the same circut or do they all have to be the same?

Yep, it doesn't matter what light source you use on a series circuit as long as the appropriate ballasts are available. By the way AE also makes 115s and 125s with series ballasts.
