What do you think of these bulbs? (No I am not complaining at all just wondering because its an odd brand).

Did the manufacture listed the rated hour on this specimen? Confused
Silverliner14B   [Feb 24, 2012 at 05:14 PM]
Nope, it just said it should last for years, and if it ever fails, return it to Merlite for a free replacement. Maybe that's why they went out of biz by giving away too many freebies replacing normally burned out bulbs, lol! Laughing

Laughing I'm glad you kept the good specimen Smile

Do these have a reduced lumen output compared to other 100 lamps since they're long life?
Silverliner14B   [Feb 24, 2012 at 07:46 PM]
Yes less light than the standard 100w bulbs you see in the stores, but much brighter than the 10000 hour and 20000 hour bulbs still being made.

It sucks going to walmart and the 100w GE and sylvania lamps aren't on the shelves anymore. Also odd how they carry both GE and Sylvania lamps here. I went and bought 4 boxes of 60w Sylvania Doublelife lamps. one of them doesn't work, so I sent the UPC code out in the mail to the adress on the box in hopes of a relplacement since my mom didn't want to drive me back to wally world for an exchange lol. I dropped the box on the way out of the store and thankfully it was just one lamp that died. I'd imagine these lamps are MUCH better built than even Sylvanias though.

My great-grandparents had a huge stockpile of incandescents and some blackender F20s in a little cabinet under the stairs. The house was transfered into my great-aunt's name since my great-grandparents unfourtunatly passed away. Sad I didn't look closely at the incandescents, but the tubes looked 70's-ish or before and that's also where I got my two PL adapters from.

Mike, is that stockpile of incandescents still there? Sounds like a bunch of goodies, maybe some Beacon long life bulbs which Brooks Pharmacy used to sell. Sorry to hear about your great grandparents. Wal-Mart sold the GE 90w bulbs through 2011 despite the 100w ban here in California starting a year earlier than the rest of the country.

It likely hasn't been touched since my great-grandpa died back in 2001 since there's a cabinet in the kitchen with modern lamps in it. Rite-Aid bought out all of the Brooks Pharmacy stores here. I should check.... The next time i'm there probably won't be until the 4th of July though since that's really the only time she has company over. I'll write down some date codes. I do remember seeing at least one of those odd shaped Phillips lamps. I think it was a 100w lamp sitting on a shelf all alone in the garage near the T17 fixture.

Incandescent bulbs made today are nowhere near as durable as the oldies. Most use unsupported CC-6 or CC-8 filaments that jiggle and wiggle and will easily break if the bulb is dropped. Older lamps from the 1970s and earlier mostly used supported filaments (they had at least one extra support that kept the filament stable) and they are much less likely to break. It's cheaper to manufacture bulbs with unsupported filaments, and it allows the filament to bulb a little brighter since the extra support draws some of the heat away from the filament.

Virtually all of the incandescents I have in my collection have supported filaments of one design or another (most have C-9 or "rough service" filaments). I was so disgusted with some recent (2000 or newer) Sylvania Super Saver XLs (unsupported filaments) where the filaments sagged and wiggled so much that they actually shorted out, that I gave all of them to Restore, a local reuse/recycling organization. I had a ton of them but needed to make room for other bulbs, etc. Now most of my stockpile include USA-made 130v long life bulbs with C-9 filaments. They will survive even severe shocks if I drop them and they are designed to burn for a long, long time.

I got some Sylvania 100w bulbs that are rated at 6000 hour and they were made in Canada. They are 90s though, with thick CC-8 filaments. I do love durable bulbs made in the USA like the GE Survivors and the Westinghouse Industrial Services, plus all those made by the smaller companies. Have you heard of the Newcandescent.com bulbs? They are being sold as rough service bulbs made by Trojan Inc and I ordered some yesterday from eBay.

Anything in excess of 5,000 hours is unusual for Sylvania.

I had not heard about Newcandescent. Will have to check it out.
