The restoration is nearly complete! All that is left now is to find a proper glass refractor for it, get a new PC socket for it, and replace the socket bracket and make a cover for the gaping hole in the reflector around the socket.
Lit with an NOS (well, used to be lol) Philips Lifeguard. 100W MV, /DX, ED23.5.
I converted my R47 to 100w mercury using a 70w PSMH ballast lol. Mine sports a new (well is was new) 100w Sylvania /DX ED23.5 which I think was actually made by Philips.
Ah yeah I remember that ingenious ignitor switch to use either CMH or MV lamps. I was able to get a genuine Advance 120V HX 100W MV ballast on eBay for $18.50 with free shipping. The thing runs HOT though!
Actually, the Lexalite acrylic refractor pictured is OEM for the PowerLite model pictured. Otherwise, you need an American Electric-style like ARK Lighting uses or Cooper used for a brief time.
Yeah, one thing I like about 70w PSMH even though it's not a "real" MV ballast is that you can wire them up to switch between lamp types easily. It can even run HPS lamps too if you can get your hands on a European 70w HPS which has similar specs as our 70w PSMH.
Nice score on the ballast, seems like the Advance HX mercury ballasts run hot though. I have a NOS Advance 50w HX ballast that also runs quite hot too. Maybe the Advance low wattage HX mercury ballasts just tend to run hot.
If you find a source for a OEM glass, I might buy one too, the one in my R47 had a small crack before I got it so I might consider buying a replacement glass if it's cheap.
Yeah my 50W MV HX Advance runs like a hot coal. I guess it's probably because the ballasts are so small. Seems like they undersized the ballasts so they'd fit into more compact fixtures. My OEM 100W MV ballasts are much larger. I've noticed that with HPS chokes too. Replacement brand ones are much smaller than most OEM ones.
The photocell socket arrived today and way installed in the fixture! This beauty is on its way to shining once more! When it's complete I will probably install it on the tapered arm on my deck. Not the same style tapered arms used up in Canada and 6ft instead of the ~8-10ft you guys typically use but close enough. Actually, if this light were installed by Narragansett Electric back when it was made in 1986, it would be installed on this style arm! Would look much better on the tapered arm though lol (as most lights to!)
That sounds right. The 50w Advance ballasts are tiny. I wonder how other brands performed but it seems the most common 50w MV ballast are the Advance ones. I measured the temperature of mine to be around 160F after running for a bit.
Ahh, nice. Thomas and Betts makes the 8' and 10' tapered arms we use. I've seen some places with 6' arms too but they aren't that common. Back in 1986, the arms used would be the exact same design, except they were made by Powerlite/Sylvania at the time.
They used to have a sub brand and separate site that they listed their arms under called Al-Struct but I think they took their site down. I still see the arms being used so I'm sure someone still makes them lol.
