OV-25 in the Backyard!
Well, after the pic this came down and the pole is headless once again. The pole couldn't handle the weight of the OV-25 (which is about 15-20 pounds i'd guess) and was bending forward. The light was swaying violently in just a breeze and the light kept sagging more and more so i took it down before it ending up damaged. I had that bad feeling in my stomach that something was about to go wrong. BTW, this had a 300W incandescent lamp and a 120V DTL PC from 1999 that would have been used if it could stay up.

The M-250A won't be going out back unfortunatly, since it's heavier than the OV-25. The only light that can go on the arm besides my Low Budget Area Light would be the NEMA Jace will be sending. Hopefully it's able to be on the set-up without fear of it getting damaged.

Looks cool, too bad you had to take in off though. Maybe you should sneak a 50 ft concrete pole, MTO truss arm and 1kW Powerlite B2213 when no one is looking. Laughing Razz

And to think i was going to use my 45pound M-400 on this pole for parties. Shocked This thing would bend like a wet noodle. Laughing

Aww I was going to sneak by your house and a stick a 50+ lbs B2213 on your pole. Laughing

If I were you I'd get a 150 ft tall highmast lighting system with a cluster of 30 1500 watt lights and then see who the boss of the neiborhood is!

Laughing He must be the boss of the bright sky association. Laughing

I'll be able to perform open-heart surgery at night in my backyard with that sucker. Laughing NGrid will have to add a few more transformers on the pole in front of my house first though. Laughing Razz

Nice set-up Mike, too bad the light had to be removed,it may need a couple lag bolts, one on each side in the flange of the arm to reduce the swaying.

If you can find one, you could try a satellite dish arm:

They're the same size as those yardblaster arms in hardware stores, but with a much tougher mounting plate!
mercuryvaporrocks   [Sep 05, 2012 at 03:49 PM]
That's a nice setup there.

Joe must live in NSTAR territory because these arms are everywhere in that system.
streetlight98   [Sep 05, 2012 at 09:26 PM]
Thanks guys! BTW, the arm's not really swaying, the pole itself is.

PEOPLE: remember twice the distance is 4 times the force. Shocked so if it is out 6ft and is 20 lb that is well over 120.

I was thinking, I may install the 2ft arm i have on this when i get the NEMA from jace so further reduce stress on the pole as bryan is right, the longer the arm, the more weight on the pole.

What kind of nema bracket? as long as it isn't an AEL bracket....although I'v used them for small cobraheads I just don't trust them with larg glass fixtures.
streetlight98   [Mar 17, 2013 at 02:36 PM]
It's a 60s American Electric arm. The only thing is though, i don't have a way to lag it in as the flange holes are farther apart then the diameter of the pole. Will the arm be safe with just the through-bolt tightened good? I'd hate to drill extra holes in the mounting flange for the lags.
streetlight98   [Feb 15, 2017 at 05:43 PM]
Ya know, I was thinking... Since my current set up actually has the arm attached directly to the deck, I wonder if I could get away with attaching a longer arm like this 4ft or one of my 6ft arms to the deck? The only thing I would be afraid of is the wind having more leverage with the longer arm and a strong gust of wind twisting the 4X4 deck post to splinters. My parents wouldn't be too happy about that lol. The 2ft NEMA arm does just fine but I would love to have a real street light arm on this. Very Happy
