I also do that with bulbs whose etches are gone to know the wattage or at least the voltage...in fact yesterday I took an old SLI Extralife bulb whose etch was gone and wrote "130v 75w" on it with a Sharpie Laughing

If the lamp isn't vintage I'll do the same in the same spot too. When i install a lamp I write the installation base in sharpie. On CFLs i just write it on the plastic part. My Sylvania May 1990 lamp that came with my OV-10 doesn't have the etch but since all my coated BT28 lamps are 175W MV i don't need to worry about writing the wattage.

eh, I've had sharpie scratch off of fluorescent and incandescent lamps when making McCann Lighting etchs on them. still more durable than the GE soft white etches that rub off of with a dry cloth lol.

Well anything on glass is iffy..
