Hmm, so basically its a incandescent fixture, but except its used with self ballasted mercury vapor lamps. Plus I didn't really know that Philips made a bucket light. Must be rare.

Yes basically an incandescent fixture used with self-ballasted mercury lamps. I think only Philips in Canada produced these, they are getting pretty rare now.

Were these ever sold to the US market? I found one on a BP gas station a few years ago and could never figure out what it (...)

Yes, there was a Norelco version of a SBMV fixture sold to the US market.
