Installing a preheater!
I recently converted my 2nd wraparound which was trigger start. I never had problems with the Advance ballast that was in it, but seemed to underpower lamps. After spending a couple of hours converting the fixture I installed it back. In this fixture now live a Philips and a GE F20T12/D, combined with a Leviton and a Provo starter, supplied by two Frost FBLL preheat ballasts. I already have two extra GE F20T12/D I found yesterday at the recycle centre, which are going in the next preheat fixture!

Hey Vince Excactly what is Trigger Start?...and if i do say so myself...cool install!
TiCoune66   [Aug 07, 2010 at 12:41 AM]
The Trigger Start circuit is a modified Rapid Start circuit meant for smaller preheat lamps (usually 20W and lower). Trigger start ballasts heat cathodes at ~ 9V instead of ~3.5V or 4V for 30W and 40W RS lamps.

I always thought trigger start was another name for rapid start

It's not completely false! The only difference is the voltage sent to filaments. Otherwise it's the same thing. Wink

Is it a lower or higher voltage? Do they make F20T12 RS ballasts?

Check my first comment above Wink

Oops, sorry. Embarrassed Is the increase voltage to make the lamp life longer or it is just to allow preheat lamps?

20W and smaller tubes are still made with preheat-type cathodes today. They are double-coil and need a higher preheat voltage. 3 and 4ft tubes got a new triple-coil cathode in the late 50s that doesn't need as much voltage.
