I also saw a powerdoor...(from my town) that had MELTED coils....I had a picture not sure if I still have it but I will look for it....

At my old job we once replaced a MH ballast that was severely fried. The varnish melted and sizzled, leaving the whole inside of the fixture covered in gunk.

You should try them when they cook in a sealed enclosure, and cannot get any oxygen to turn black............

yes sir! Pretty nasty huh? Burnt out ballasts can be smelly smelling like burnt stuff and sometimes have some kinda electrical burn smell!
