400 watt HPS. I would not use a polycarbonate refractor in this one. 250s are even too high.

how do you knot it was poly?
NiMo   [Aug 21, 2011 at 02:25 AM]
There are three different depths of refractors for the GE M400 series. The Poly refractors are the deepest and have a rather "dull" appearance when light reflects on it during the day.
streetlight98   [Aug 21, 2011 at 02:28 AM]
but there's no lens in this at all

Thank you Captain Obvious. I was making the point that should the utility install a new refractor, they had better use glass.
GullWhiz   [Aug 21, 2011 at 02:33 AM]
He's talking about refractor replacement....If they were to put a new one in, it should be glass...that's what it means.......

My local electric company USED To put plastics on high wattage...but not anymore.....now they use glass because those plastics melted or browned too fast...so they started using glass....only 100 or 150 or 175 watters get's the plastics...anything higher must have glass!
Antstar85   [Aug 21, 2011 at 02:35 AM]
we havw a few m-400a's in holyoke with the plastic lens. they are browned out.

all the medium fixtures here are glass. Some 250w small fixtures are plastic though.
gailgrove   [Aug 21, 2011 at 05:52 PM]
Thankfully all of our fixtures have glass refractors even the 70 watters, I really don't think plastic should be used at all, for sure not on anything over 175 watts.

The only plastic lens i saw on a cobrahead in Niagra Falls was on a 250w HPS 115. It was on an on ramp to i think route 405.

Are you sure about that MTO spec luminaires have glass refractors. Shocked

From MTO OPSS 2432:
"The luminaire shall be comprised of a cast aluminum ballast housing, spun or formed aluminum optical housing with a glass lens or refractor, and stainless steel hardware."
gailgrove   [Aug 24, 2011 at 11:30 PM]
I've seen a few MTO lights with plastic refractors.

It could be a contractor not following spec though.
