"If I push this 10 times...the light changes faster"
This is the crosswalk push button that activates the side street walk signal. Pressing it places a call to the cabinet to service the walk cycle. When activated. The controller displays a "C" for ped calls on phase 2 (Side Street crosswalk). The next time phase 2 is green, the "Man" symbol on the signal will display.

The button is a brand new button from General Traffic Equipment in New York. It is their 1010ADA model. Not cheap but works great!

What with these people thinking pressing the button repeatedly thinking it would switch faster. Same idea with these people on the cars creeping toward the intersection on the loop thinking it would change faster Rolling Eyes

haha yes. It's amazing that after 40+ years of using these detection methods, that the common public still doesn't understand how it works.

The activation of a vehicle or pedestrian detector places a call to the vehicle or pedestrian input in the cabinet and the controller remembers to put it in the sequence. It's actually quite simple. But very few people have patience to understand it.

I always get a good laugh out of those youtube videos stating "I found a secret code! If you push it 3 times fast, and 3 times slow the light changes" when, in fact, the only thing connected to the button is the detector input.

Unless of course the button is the new "smart ones" that talk. Then it goes through a control module to provide the voice/audible/and tactile features, then to the detector inputs.

Loop detectors are still a big improvement over the pneumatic detectors that they replaced. The loop will work for a bicycle, if correctly set, whilst the pneumatic detector sometimes would not react to a light motor vehicle.

inductance loops are good if the road doesn't expand and contract too much and destroy it. They have a hard time detecting a bicycle without being too highly set. If the loop amps are set to high then cross-talk will be a problem.

Some places have bike lanes a loop turned and run for bikes. But the best option is video detection. It's also the most expensive

True, but most cyclists here seem to be totally colour blind when it comes to traffic lights. Taxi drivers as well.

The color blind can still tell the signals by the position of the indications within the display. And if they cannot tell anything from what the lights say...they shouldn't be driving.

You have a lot to learn about drivers in other areas..........Wink

i'm well aware of the drivers that are out there since I drive often. I don't know how most of them even get their license.

Anyways---
Here's the pedestrian cycle on video
