I've noticed these have been becoming more common.

Federal standards require all new pedestrian signals be countdown if the clearance is greater than 7 seconds. However, older signals and signals left in remaining county/state stockrooms can be used till the end of their service lives.

Nice animation, countdown signals are now standard here too, although we still have quite a few non-countdown.

We have countdowns here too except they're dual-headed with the man and hand in the top section and number board in the lower section. The pedestrian heads themselves are the size of a standard 12" traffic signal head as well, just with a different door and visor obviously.

Michael, were they retrofitted, in my area the state department uses just like above pic, but mosty counties or cities tend to retrofit and makes exactly what you discribed.....

Nope brand new installations use them. A lot of peds here were fiberoptic, so just a single man/hand module went in. For the incandescent ped signals, which were used in the Central Falls area, were never retrofitted yet.

We use the exact same system you described here, for both new and retrofit.

Drew the model in MS Paint, copied it several times over and animated it in Microsoft GIF animator. The countdown took me about an hour to do.

I first saw countdown Ped's in Birmingham,Alabama in July of 2009,fast forward a couple of years and my hometown of tyler, texas was putting them up in the downtown area. Now living here in fort worth they have some and I really appreciate the countdown.....it lets you know excactly how much scoot you need to put in your step while crossing the street.

I first saw countdown pedestrian signals in 2007. Ours timers are on the bottom section and the top section is the hand and man. Almost all our intersections and roads now have timers. Theres 2 main roads left here that have only a few intersections with timers at them. One of the roads uses single sections with no timers. The other road consists of CGE's and Fortrans that are double sections but the bottom section was disconnected during the incandescent to LED changeover, so the bottom is doing nothing.

There was once talk a few years ago about stopping installations of countdown timers because people were taking more risks and it caused more accidents. Countdowns are still being installed presently, so that talk went to scrap lol
